Recently, a Red Dead Redemption 2 fan shared an image of their incredible Arthur Morgan pencil drawing. Set years before the events of 2010’s Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead 2 follows the Van der Linde gang in the months leading up to its collapse. Instead of once more following directly in the footsteps of John Marston, players find themselves strapped in the boots of protagonist Arthur Morgan - a man who spent much of his life entrenched within the Old West’s criminal element.
It’s no surprise that players quickly took a liking to Arthur; he’s inarguably one of Rockstar Games’ more complex characters, with layers upon layers of nuance that would take quite a while to analyze in full. His aesthetic look continues to prove rather appealing as well, especially since users can customize his look in whichever they see fit in-game. That appeal is most notably reflected in fan art that still makes the rounds online, even three years after Red Dead Redemption 2’s release. In fact, in celebration of Halloween, one person carved Arthur Morgan’s box art design on a pumpkin. Now yet another piece of Arthur-inspired art has drawn the attention of the Red Dead community.
Over the weekend, Reddit user ragneidr shared a pencil drawing they completed that depicts a portrait of Arthur Morgan. The drawing appears to be inspired by a scene near the end of the story, where a sick Arthur confesses his fears to a Nun he’s grown relatively close to throughout the course of the campaign. It’s remembered as a poignant, heartbreaking exchange, one that perfectly exemplifies the aforementioned complexities of Arthur’s character. Fascinatingly, ragneidr’s portrait manages to capture it all in spades. See the drawing in the image linked below:
As with most pieces of fan art, the above is nothing short of brilliant. That it’s a pencil drawing makes the incredible attention to detail that much more awe-inspiring. The pinkish hue at the corner of Arthur Morgan’s left eye serves as a particularly thoughtful touch that warrants mention. While the spot of color could merely show the natural look of his eye, it may also represent another hint that this is Arthur post-TB diagnosis.
Red Dead Redemption 2 hit store shelves approximately three years ago in late October 2018. Its core gameplay mechanics left much to be desired for some, yet most would agree the though-provoking narrative made up for every other shortcoming. The Rockstar title quickly went on to earn a slew of rewards for storytelling, acting, and more.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available to play now across Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.
