Exclusive Interview with Dear Genre

Music, News

Are you making any rounds with testing out new music on the road?

I’m not currently traveling with my music but I’m always open to it. I just started testing out new music locally though and the reaction has been very positive.

What stories do you want to tell in your upcoming music?

People might have to stick around for the answer to that question. I can’t justify ruining the surprise..

Are there any rules you set for yourself when you know you have to concentrate on making music?

I’ve never been stern about setting rules for myself in that way. Creativity has always come to me at random which makes it almost impossible to plan for.

Do you ever feel like you need to label yourself as an artist?

I think starting out I felt the need to label myself to become relevant or fit a certain niche. These days I feel completely free to make what I make without much desire to fit any sort of label.

Is letting the work talk for itself a rule of thumb for you?

Yes, very much. I’ve always felt that if you can’t let the work speak for itself, there must be something lacking in the work. I’m definitely guilty of feeling the need to explain myself in the past though.

What are the interactions with your fans like when you hear feedback from them about your music?

Interactions with my fans when I hear feedback has always seemed to be genuine and heartfelt. I’ve noticed the spectrum of age varies quite drastically from approximately 18-65 which means I’m able to hear many varying points of feedback and opinion. I hear compliments on the album artwork often which has always been a strong focus of mine. Song favorites come from my entire discography and not a few select albums. It’s not rare for people to tell me I look taller in videos.

What is a golden rule in music that you will always uphold?

I’ve never been one to trip up about tempo, the laws of songwriting, music theory, song structure or any of the likes. My golden rule in music that I will always uphold is; ‘If it sounds good and feels good then it is good.”

What’s it like moving forward after a song release?

Moving forward after a song release, I’m always sure my label, ‘Floating Island Records’ and my management team, BsquaredMGMT have all the necessary files they need in order to start promoting the track to press, radio, blogs, tv etc..

It’s also up to me to use social media to create awareness/advertising for the song in order to generate initial attention. New songs are always thrown into live performances and highlighted through events for a matter of months following the release. There’s also a big emphasis right now on Spotify playlisting which is a great way to generate awareness if done right.
