Lala Kent Explains Why She Was Offended By Demi Lovato’s Sobriety Comments

Reality TV

Several months ago Demi Lovato labeled herself as “California sober.” To anyone in the dark, that basically means Demi doesn’t drink or use hard drugs, but she does enjoy a nice bit-o-weed every now and again. As someone very about that life, I see you Demi. Let’s also be clear that it’s referred to as “California sober” for a reason. That obvious reason being…you’re not sober.

Lala Kent isn’t having it though. Not then, and not now either. Initially, Lala took to a podcast to insult the pop icon over her recovery following a horrifying overdose in 2018. Lala referred to the phrase “California sober” as “super offensive.” She compared herself to Demi motherfucking Lovato saying, “There are people out there who work their ass off to never take themselves out of reality and to never place themselves in an altered state.” Okay? And there are some people who walk a different path, Laler. Isn’t that like, her whole thing anyways?

Season 9 of Vanderpump Rules is about to be very interesting for Lala. She’s been ousted by almost every remaining cast member for her fame focused behavior, friendship flip-flopping, and general displeasure with everyone around her at all times. Things are already popping off screen too. People reported on Lala’s recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live where she once again protested the idea of someone being “California sober”. This time, her shots were aimed at her former bestie, James Kennedy.

During an early episode of the season, James’ girlfriend Raquel Leviss referred to him as being “California sober” in her confessional. Lala is still claiming, “It’s not a real thing. [It’s] not a real thing.” Okay but it literally is, though. You don’t have to participate, but not drinking alcohol and only smoking weed is certainly ‘a real thing.’

“The term is dry, and I’m obviously in the program. I’m with a lot of incredible men and women who do everything in their power to never pick up any sort of substance,” Lala explained. “So to hear someone say, ‘I’m California sober,’ it doesn’t sit right with me. Because I’m a person who only drank and smoked weed and almost lost my entire life. So, I don’t like it.” Okay does she not like it or is it not a thing? Or because she doesn’t like it she think’s it doesn’t exist? Is that it?

Not every method or lifestyle works for everyone. And I don’t think that’s what DemiRaquel, or even James are saying in this case. It’s definitely not what I am saying. But for Lala to suddenly think she’s the authority on others’ recovery is…a lot. She’s a professional hostess turned reality star turned…book writer? She sips on baby bottles to sleep. Literally no one, Demi Lovato included, is coming to her for grown woman shit.

Lala added to her statement saying, “Just don’t disrespect people who work really hard to never pick up anything and remain in their right frame of mind at all times.” Not sure anyone was doing that. In fact, I think people are differentiating themselves from that very difficult and respectable choice. But maybe I’m missing something.
