Instagram users have the option to quickly and easily restore a post, but there is a time limit for getting the content back before it’s permanently deleted. When a post is deleted, it immediately disappears from view, but users can still find it in a different section of the Instagram app. Here’s a quick explanation on how to get deleted Instagram posts back, and how you have before it is too late.
There are multiple options when it comes to creating content on Instagram beyond simply sharing a photo. Users can create an Instagram Story, a picture or video that only lasts 24 hours before it disappears. Alternatively, users can post a Reel, which involves creating a video up to 60 seconds long. Then there is the option to post a long-form video through Instagram’s IGTV, with the ability to upload a video anywhere between on minute and one hour in length.
As Instagram explains, users will need to access the ‘Recently Deleted‘ section of their account in order to restore a post to its former glory. To do this, visit the Instagram profile, tap on the three-line button in the upper-right corner, and then on Settings. From here, tap on “Account” and then on “Recently Deleted” to find the freshly banished posts. The deleted content will be organized under different tabs at the top of the screen, so users can either click on the Profile, Reels or IGTV icon to filter the results. It is then just a matter of tapping on the deleted post, then on the three-dot button in the upper-right corner, and finally on “Restore.”
How Long Before It Is Too Late?
To make things easier, Instagram labels the post with how many days the user has to take action before the post is permanently deleted. Pictures and videos added to the user’s Instagram profile, Reels and IGTV videos will stay in the Recently Deleted folder for 30 days. However, Stories will only remain for 24 hours before being permanently deleted. If a user doesn’t see a post they took down under the Recently Deleted heading, that likely means that the post has already been permanently deleted and can’t be recovered.
After the time limit is up, it’s possible that Instagram will retain the content for a total of 90 days. According to Instagram, a copy of the content is backed up to its system, in case it was removed without the user’s consent — for example, if a software error occurred. Instagram may also hold onto deleted content if it violated Instagram’s Terms of Use policy. So users should make sure they restore any posts they want to keep before the time runs out and before the content is relegated to the depths of Instagram’s trash can.
