Thanks to a new preview from DC Comics, it’s been revealed that an upcoming issue of Nightwing will see Dick Grayson getting no rest as his adventure will be one continuous image with no panels throughout the entire book. Unlike traditional comics, Nightwing’s upcoming adventure will reveal the full scope of Dick Grayson’s skills and acrobatics while in pursuit of criminals in his city, providing a unique look with his sequential movements all on the same page simultaneously.
Coming from writer Tom Taylor and artist Bruno Redondo, Nightwing #87 will feature Dick Grayson’s ongoing battle to help his city of Blüdhaven like never before, using his recently inherited billions from the Bat-Family’s late butler Alfred to create the Alfred Pennyworth Foundation, funding purely philanthropic efforts to help the city’s residents (with a particular focus on its homeless community). It’s also been teased that he’ll be working directly with his newly discovered half-sister Melinda Zucco, who’s recently become Blüdhaven’s mayor while making the city’s organized crime bosses (Salvatore Maroni and Blockbuster) think she’s working for them.
Now, a new look at Nightwing #87 from Polygon has revealed that the upcoming issue will showcase Nightwing’s next adventure as one continuous image without the typical use of panels. Instead, Nightwing will be depicted by artist Bruno Redondo with sequential versions of himself as he moves through the pages, showing where he’s been and where he’s headed all at the same time. Furthermore, the preview provides a look at some dynamic cover art, as well as a variant featuring Nightwing passed out with his adorable dog Haley (aka Bitewing) who looks as though she’ll be in danger according to the synopsis. Here are the cover images for Nightwing #87, the synopsis, and the first seven pages put together as a continuous panel (Recommendation: turn your mobile device horizontally):
- NIGHTWING #87
- This special Nightwing issue is ONE CONTINUOUS IMAGE! That’s right—if you placed every page next to each other, you’ll have one poster image with this story! Now that billionaire Dick Grayson has publicly dedicated his funds to save Blüdhaven, he’s a wanted man—and that’s why he finds hired killers breaking in to steal his dog, Haley!
Clearly, the upcoming issue of Nightwing looks to be quite the dynamic and unique experiment, and it’s one that Tom Taylor himself is excited for as well, sharing his enthusiasm for Redondo’s work on Twitter and claiming that the incredible undertaking “broke his brain.” While the preview images provided aren’t completed, it does offer an exciting look at what’s to come for Dick Graysonin his upcoming adventure.
Dick Grayson is the type of vigilante who’s always on the move; jumping, swinging, and diving from rooftops with equal parts grace and skill thanks to his origins as a circus trapeze artist. As such, it seems as though this unique and new format will cater itself quite well to his mobility and acrobatics, and it should prove to be a really fun and entertaining issue when Nightwing #87 releases on December 21.
