Kandi Burruss has been such a rock on the Real Housewives of Atlanta since her debut, I often forget she’s not technically an OG. Kandi has always been the hard-working mom who keeps it real about her career, her family problems, and her relationships in front of the camera. Whether she’s portraying the role of Mistress Angel or just snacking on spaghetti out of a Tupperware in her car, Kandi is always authentically her.
So it was heartbreaking to see in a recent video Kandi posted on YouTube, shared by The Peach Report Daily, that she dealt with depression at a young age. But it’s not surprising that she’s talking about it openly — like I said, she’s always one to be honest and real, especially when it comes to the tough stuff. “In middle school, I actually wanted to commit suicide,” she said. “But Lord, praise the Lord, I wasn’t able to find my mama’s gun when I wanted to do it.” Her emotional way of telling the story makes it clear it’s been something hard for her to talk about, but it’s an important message.
Kandi also went on to talk about her time in high school. “I started finding myself, but I also lost my brother in high school,” she continued. “So still dealing with a bout of depression and pushing through.” I just want to jump through the screen and give her a big hug.

Kandi concluded her story by trying to share some inspiring words. “In anything that you’re doing, there is going to have to be a sense of even when you don’t want to, when it doesn’t feel good, when you’re self-conscious, when you’re just feeling emotionally out of it, a sense of in order to get to your end goals, you’re going to have to push through,” she said. Preach Kandi.

That’s the truth, especially coming from someone with a rocky past who was able to come out of it with an amazing career and family to show for it. That’s why I’ll never complain about her holding a peach on RHOA — she’s earned it by far at this point.
