Free-to-play indie FPS game Splitgate will have players jumping through portals and shooting opponents as they try to win PvP matches. Adding guns and functional portals to battle royales does not seem like a revolutionary concept, but it is one people really seem to like as they propel Splitgate up the Steam seller charts. Splitgate has become so popular that the surge of players temporarily overloaded the servers.
With an extended development time and postponed release date due to popularity, Splitgate continues its beta stage where players can freely play and stress the game. More experienced players have learned the ins and outs of the system to make their matches easier, but new players may still want guidance to get started. Here are a few tips and tricks for new players to get an edge over their opponents in Splitgate.
Keep on Moving and Embrace the Portals in Splitgate
If there was one major principle all players should follow in Splitgate, it would be to keep moving. Players should never stay still or remain in the same spot for too long. Because the creation of portals opens up a myriad of ways to attack people, there is usually no such thing as a safe position on a map. Someone could make a portal above an opponent and shoot through it, for instance. Or, a player could make a portal close by an opponent, build momentum by running, and use that momentum by entering the portal to propel themselves into a new attacking position.
Portals are one of the main tools for all players, so it is only fitting that people have found creative ways to use them to their advantage. From changing positions to making a new firing angle, these portals are meant to facilitate movement in one form or another. Because of this, players will need to be quick and frequently change positions. Being adaptive is likely to serve a player better than relying on old methods of camping and strategic positioning.
Use EMP Grenades and Headshots in Splitgate
This is not immediately apparent to new players, but there are ways to pull one over on other players in Splitgate. EMP grenades can disable portals, making them extremely useful for when players want to cut off an opponent’s portal-based movement or method of attack. In fact, one could argue that these EMP charges can serve as the player’s best lines of defense given their advantageous application.
For players interested in offense, Splitgate allows them to aim at heads for extra damage, as they may expect in other modern FPS games. While the hitbox may change in the future, the ability to go for headshots will no doubt be useful for players who want to eliminate opponents as quickly as possible. Before trying to land a headshot, players may want to take some time and head over to the practice range to test out how big the headshot hitbox actually is.
Memorize the Maps in Splitgate
Memorizing the arena is useful in other PvP games, and it is definitely useful in Splitgate. From sniper positions to weapon spawns, knowing the layout of any given map will be useful to any player. New players are advised to engage in the Races game mode, where they will be required to collect an array of disco balls across the map as quickly as possible. Completing this mode several times can help them memorize the general layout of the area. It is also a good time to experiment with using portals to quicken player movement. It will not help the player memorize the spawn locations for the best guns in Splitgate, but that can be learned over time when the player engages in more matches.
