The Suicide Squad Post-Credits Scenes & Spinoff Setup Explained

Movies

Warning: SPOILERS for The Suicide Squad post-credit scenes.

The Suicide Squad post-credits scenes explain that two previous characters who were thought to be dead are really alive, which allows the second of those scenes to set up an upcoming spinoff show for John Cena’s Peacemaker, premiering in January 2022. The first Suicide Squad movie may not have been a critical hit, but it was certainly a global financial success. Warner Bros quickly put a sequel and several spinoffs into development, though as of 2021, only two of them have progressed far enough to actually release.

The first of those sequels and spinoffs to come out was Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn). Margot Robbie’s long-awaited film released in 2020 shortly before the pandemic hit most of Europe and the United States. It not only brought back Harley Quinn after four years off-screen but also separated her story from that of Jared Leto’s Joker. No longer were they boyfriend and girlfriend, and Harley spent the entire movie breaking away from her previous life while also building a new one with her newfound friends.

Of course, the second movie to come from WB’s initial batch is The Suicide Squad. Quite a few writers and directors tried their hand at cracking a Suicide Squad sequel, but it wasn’t until James Gunn was hired in 2018 that things finally started to move forward. The Suicide Squad quickly and not-so-quietly wraps up the David Ayer era of Suicide Squad while simultaneously laying the foundation for future stories with Bloodsport, Harley Quinn, and Peacemaker, who makes a return in The Suicide Squad post-credits scene after previously “dying” earlier in the movie.

What Happened To Weasel

Weasel in The Suicide Squad Credits Scene

The first character who “died” in The Suicide Squad was Weasel (Sean Gunn). Apparently no one thought to check if he could swim, and despite being a villain, Savant (Michael Rooker) pulled him to safety – though not soon enough. The entire ordeal continued the ongoing depiction of Weasel in DC Comics, that he’s a joke compared to real supervillains that heroes face everyday. It’s why Rick Flag initially said Weasel was harmless, then corrected himself because Weasel did, in fact, murder several children.

At the start of the film, Weasel seemed to have died from drowning and the people at A.R.G.U.S. didn’t think to confirm after the initial battle took place on the beach. It wasn’t until the scene immediately after The Suicide Squad‘s title card but before the actual credits roll that the film confirmed Weasel was still alive. What’s interesting is that weasels are actually supposed to be skilled swimmers, so if the biology of real-life weasels can be applied to The Suicide Squad‘s own Weasel, then it seems he faked his death. It’s unlikely, but still a possibility, and it would it make sense considering when the scene takes place.

Although it’s not confirmed exactly when the credits scene happens in accordance to the rest of the story, given the time of day, it’s likely Weasel woke up that same night Task Force X landed on Corto Maltese. After all, it doesn’t make much sense for Weasel to lay on the beach for almost two days. Where he goes after waking up is unknown, but there’s one thing the villain might be overlooking: He still has the bomb inside his head. All Amanda Waller and A.R.G.U.S. have to do is check up on Weasel to discover that he’s still alive, and they could easily recapture him and bring him back to Belle Reve.

The Suicide Squad Post-Credits Scene Sets Up Peacemaker’s Show

John Cena as Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad Post Credits Scene

While Weasel’s scene comes right after the movie ends, The Suicide Squad‘s actual post-credits scenes happens at the very end of the credits, and it sets up the first DCEU TV show, Peacemaker. During the pandemic, James Gunn pitched, wrote, and filmed the first season of a Peacemaker spinoff series starring John Cena, a show that would breakdown the origins of the supervillain. At the time, it was unclear if the series would take place before or after The Suicide Squad since there was the chance that Peacemaker would be killed in the film. Judging by The Suicide Squad post-credits scene, it could be both.

Peacemaker’s entire origin story is unknown; all that’s been revealed about him is that he will do virtually anything to obtain and maintain everlasting peace. So his upcoming spinoff series can depict his origins while also taking a look at what happens to him following Task Force X’s mission on Corto Maltese. The Suicide Squad‘s post-credits scene surprisingly shows Peacemaker alive in a hospital. Bloodsport seemingly killed him earlier in the film by shooting through Peacemaker’s bullet with a smaller bullet. Peacemaker fell down and started bleeding out, but he was miraculously saved. Though Peacemaker is at peak human level, he doesn’t have any superpowers of his own, so his ability to survive the gunshot is amazing.

His standalone story could spin out of The Suicide Squad because two members of A.R.G.U.S. showed up at the hospital to recruit him for another mission; they need him “to save the f***ing world.” Starro was defeated, so whatever Peacemaker’s mission is in the HBO Max TV series, it likely won’t include hunting down Bloodsport for Amanda Waller. Instead, he will either work with or against A.R.G.U.S. and people like Vigilante (Freddie Stroma). Peacemaker‘s specific plot points have been kept under wraps, but based on The Suicide Squad post-credits scene, something big must be happening if the U.S. government is willing to put everything on the line to have Peacemaker save the world, which is only the case because he killed Waller’s right-hand man, Rick Flag.

The Suicide Squad’s Future In The DCEU

The Suicide Squad Image Features the Team Literally On The Run

Whether or not Amanda Waller sent her two employees to bring back Peacemaker is unclear, but it seems at least a part of A.R.G.U.S. continues to exist after the Starro event on Corto Maltese. That means Bloodsport has, so far, kept up his end of the bargain by not releasing the information so long as he and the rest of Task Force X remain free. But that doesn’t mean another version of the team can’t exist in the future. Either with Peacemaker at the helm or someone else, there’s potential for Suicide Squad 3 to happen since Amanda Waller and A.R.G.U.S. are still up and running – and comic book worlds never have a shortage of supervillains for them to recruit.

For now, at least part of the Suicide Squad’s corner of the DCEU will continue to push forward. The Peacemaker spinoff appears to be a sequel series based on The Suicide Squad‘s post-credits scene, so Peacemaker could be operating independently for A.R.G.U.S. or he could escape and take on his own mission. Regardless, there’s still space for Suicide Squad 3 as long as the sequel is a big enough hit with audiences and critics alike. James Gunn has previously discussed the possibility of making Suicide Squad 3, though he thinks a sequel would include a different team. Given how his movie ends, that certainly seems like the route to take, but whether or not it happens remains to be seen.
