James Gunn Has More DCEU Projects Planned Confirms DC Films Head

Movies

James Gunn has more projects coming in the DCEU, says the head of DC Films. Shortly after being let go from Disney in 2018, Warner Bros. quickly hired James Gunn to take the reins on The Suicide Squad, the stand-alone sequel to the 2016 film that performed well at the box-office but was panned by critics and audiences. Now The Suicide Squad is set to open and has gotten some of the best reviews of Gunn’s career and is currently the highest-rated DCEU film on Rotten Tomatoes, a sharp contrast to the first film being the worst-reviewed entry in the series on the site.

Gunn’s schedule is currently very busy. He just finished work on The Suicide Squad spin-off series Peacemaker which will premiere on HBO Max in January 2022. The director is currently getting ready to begin production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special which are set to be the final installments in his Guardians of the Galaxy story. After four major projects back to back, Gunn is due for some rest. Yet it appears that he isn’t quite done with the DC Universe.

In an interview with THR, DC Films President Walter Hamada hinted that Gunn would return to the universe. Hamada spoke about how he enjoyed working with Gunn and is always welcome back. Hamada did say he and Gunn have more projects planned but didn’t divulge exactly what or if it would be another film or series. Hamada said:

“Gunn is always welcome back, whatever he wants to do. He really has a vision and he’s a great partner with us. Whenever he wants to come back, we’re ready for him. He’ll be back. We have more stuff planned.”

There are several properties Gunn could tackle next for DC. Gunn was offered a chance to do a Superman movie but passed on it in favor of The Suicide Squad, and now Warner Bros. has two separate Superman projects planned so the likelihood of it being Superman seems slim. He also considered directing a Krypto the Superdog film, but now the superpowered canine will appear in the upcoming animated film DC League of Super-Pets with Dwayne Johnson set to voice Krypto. Based on the early word of mouth, the studio could be planning a sequel to Gunn’s The Suicide Squad allowing him to incorporate characters he didn’t get to in the first film like Man-Bat and Killer Frost.

Gunn has already confirmed he has had ideas for more spin-offs based on The Suicide Squad, so the next project could be a television show in the vein of Peacemaker. Ratcatcher 2, Polka-Dot Man, Bloodsport, and King Shark would all be ones that could essentially hold their own series. Given the popularity of Harley Quinn, Gunn could work on a project involving her. Peacemaker is even set to introduce two new heroes to the DCEU, Adriana Chase aka Vigilante, and Judomaster. Those two characters have a rich legacy that stretches far back into DC Comics history that, depending on how they are received in Peacemaker, could serve as a springboard for newer projects. Whatever DCEU project Gunn decides next, it will be one worth the wait.
