Warning: contains major spoilers for Wonder Girl #2!
DC’s new Wonder Woman, Yara Flor, is being hunted by every faction of Amazons. Wonder Girl #2 shows what happens when two champions of each group run into one another. The result is far from a peaceful exchange.
Yara Flor is in Brazil and the Amazons of Themyscira and Bana-Mighdall are searching for her. Her sudden appearance and return home has triggered a mysterious threat. It’s also put a plan into action that involves the goddess, Hera. In Future State, Yara is the next Wonder Woman. Last issue, however, Yara didn’t have her powers yet. It was also revealed that she has not been raised among Amazons as a warrior, which begs the question – how much of a threat could she really be?
It turns out that Yara can actually cause quite a bit of trouble for every party involved. Wonder Girl #2 is created by the team of Jöelle Jones, Adriana Melo, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles. It reveals that Hippolyta is also sending her own representative – Cassie Sandsmark, daughter of Zeus - the current Wonder Girl. Cassie picked up the mantle after Donna Troy; a mantle that seems like it will soon be passing to Yara until she grows into the role of Wonder Woman. However, Bana-Mighdall’s champion, and Cassie’s former teacher, won’t let Wonder Girl be the first to reach Yara – not without a fight.
While hunting for Yara in Brazil, Cassie and Artemis cross paths. They once worked together, but that is no longer an option. The Amazonian rift and divergent goals in this instance prevent it from being a possibility. Though both volunteer to go after Yara, both have different ways of wanting to address her. Artemis and the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall see Yara as a threat that requires elimination. Faruka, Queen of the Egyptian Amazon faction that Artemis is part of, has already sent out assassins when Artemis volunteers to deal with the problem. She insists and strikes out on her own. Cassie, on the other hand, wants to seek out Yara to help her. As a hero, she doesn’t want harm to come to the young woman. She wants to help her hideout and avoid being a problem. Like Artemis, Cassie is insistent on wanting to take on the search for Yara, though with a more positive plan in mind.
As if this wasn’t enough, Hera also sent Eros – the god of love – to retrieve the future Wonder Girl for her. He doesn’t have a run-in with any of the Amazons or their assassins, but Yara unintentionally causes some trouble for him too. Thus far, it still isn’t known why these groups are hunting her down. She seems to be the key to something that will cause a big change, but what that could be is anyone’s guess. It seems likely that it may in part be due to the presence of the third group of Amazons in Brazil – actual Amazonians. This group has not yet been seen outside of Future State, though Yara had already joined up with them and was a leader within that event. Whoever reaches Yara first will certainly have a big influence on how she views her pursuers. How far the Amazons will go hunting down DC’s future Wonder Woman remains to be seen, but neither side will hesitate to attack the other whenever their paths cross in this pursuit.
