The most intricate stories in media know where things are headed long before they get there, and they oftentimes drop clues to let the viewers know where it’s going. The Vampire Diaries loves foreshadowing, and the series often had the characters say or do things that would have a deeper meaning later in the show.

10 Caroline Plans A June Wedding

Caroline and Stefan married in season 8 of The Vampire Diaries

When Caroline first meets Stefan in the pilot, she immediately tries to flirt with him. She tells Bonnie that she’s planning a June wedding, and tries to convince him to sneak off with her at the back-to-school party.

Stefan says that the two of them are never going to happen, and Caroline ends up spiraling in self-doubt by the end of the night. But Stefan eats his words when he proposes to Caroline years down the line in an episode titled “We’re Planning a June Wedding.”

9 Elena Tells Damon It Might Be Different If They Met First

At the end of the Season 3 finale of The Vampire Diaries, a decision between the Salvatore brothers was finally made. Elena tells Damon that Stefan came into her life at a time when she needed someone and she fell for him instantly. She goes on to say that it might’ve been different if she met Damon first. But little did she know at the time, that she did.

Before the accident that killed her parents, Damon mistook Elena for Katherine when he first came to Mystic Falls. Elena opens up about her problems with Matt, and Damon tells Elena “You want a love that consumes you. You want passion, adventure, and even a little danger.” It was an exact description of what her relationship with Damon would become, and Elena acknowledges it later in the show.

8 Tyler Tells Klaus That Caroline Will Forget Him

Klaus and Caroline kiss in The Originals.

The cut scene between Klaus and Tyler was first released on The Vampire Diaries Season 4 boxset and was later uploaded to Youtube. Although there wasn’t enough time to feature it in the episode, it was one of the biggest examples of foreshadowing in the entire series.

Tyler tells Klaus that as long as he’s on the run from him, he’s going to remind him of what he’s missing out on with Caroline. He goes on to say that Klaus will never mean anything to her, and she’ll eventually forget him. Ironically over a decade later, Caroline’s last words to Klaus in The Originals are, “I’ll never forget you.” They kiss goodbye before Klaus sacrifices himself for his daughter.

7 Damon Is Happy To Let Bonnie Die For Elena

Damon saves Bonnie in The Vampire Diaries

Mystic Falls High School loves to throw decade dances, and the main characters end up fighting for their lives during almost all of them. Damon and Bonnie form a plan to keep Elena safe, and they make Elena think Bonnie died. Elena is enraged with Damon before he reveals that Bonnie is okay.

He later tells her that if it comes down to it, he’d gladly let Bonnie die for real because he would always choose Elena. Years down the line, Bonnie becomes Damon’s best friend, and when he’s faced with a choice between losing Elena for decades and saving Bonnie’s life, he chooses Bonnie.

6 Katherine Says That Hatred Is The Beginning Of A Love Story

The Vampire Diaries Elena and Damon are in the afterlife

Katherine makes her return to Mystic Falls known in The Vampire Diaries Season 2 Episode 1. She tries to get Stefan back, but he says it’ll never happen because he hates her. Katherine stabs him and says, “You hate me, huh? That sounds like the beginning of a love story, Stefan, not the end of one.”

At the end of the episode, Damon tries to make a move on Elena, but she rejects him. Damon kills Jeremy out of revenge and regrets it the moment he does. Damon is seen back at the boarding house, throwing his glass into the fireplace in anger. The scene cuts to Elena saying, “I hate him, Stefan.” It truly was the beginning of their love story, and when Elena chooses Damon once and for all, they kiss in front of the same fireplace.

5 Caroline Gives A Speech To Stefan About Moving On

After Elena breaks up with Stefan, Stefan isn’t in a good place. His only solace is his friendship with Caroline, and while they dance at prom, she tells him that someday he’ll fall madly in love and move on without even realizing it.

They share a look that seemed to hold some implications, and when Stefan does fall in love with Caroline, he doesn’t realize it until he’s already in deep. Caroline’s speech to Stefan was a perfect way of foreshadowing the romance that was about to develop between them.

4 Stefan Tells Elena That Katherine Is Incapable Of Love

Stefan and Katherine in the coffin in The Vampire Diaries.

Katherine insists that she returned to Mystic Falls for Stefan, but Stefan isn’t buying into it. He tells Elena that Katherine is incapable of love, right before a flashback reveals the opposite. Before Katherine fled town in 1864, she goes back to Stefan’s soon-to-turn body and kisses him.

Although he can’t hear her, Katherine proclaims her love and promises that they’ll be together again. And one of the only thing sabout Katherine that always remained true throughout the series was the way she felt about Stefan.

3 Caroline Says She’s Never The One Anyone Wants

Klaus Caroline And Tyler in The Vampire Diaries.

When Caroline says she’s never anyone’s first choice, it appeared to be true at the beginning of the series. Stefan rejects Caroline for Elena, and Matt pines over Elena even when he’s with Caroline. But Caroline becomes the one that everyone wants, and she ends up at the head of several love triangles. Klaus’s love for Caroline was the most notable because he completely disproved Caroline’s belief in her own appeal.

While all her other love interests had chosen someone or something over her, as even Tyler chose revenge, Klaus never did. Not only did the oldest and most powerful vampire in history have eyes only for Caroline, but he made a promise to wait for her and be her last love. When they reunite over a decade later, the tables turn and Caroline ends up being his last love before he dies.

2 Elena Tells Damon That It’ll Always Be Stefan

Elena chooses Damon in The Vampire Diaries.

The line “It’ll always be Stefan,” pops up so many times from so many different characters that it was begging to be disproved. Everyone, including Elena herself, always told Damon that she would never love him, but they couldn’t have been more wrong.

Elena breaks up with Stefan and marries Damon after they take the cure together and become human. It’s revealed in Legacies that Damon rebuilt the Gilbert house for Elena, and they even started a family of their own.

1 Klaus Leaves Caroline A Voicemail While In New Orleans

Caroline plays Klaus's voicemail in The Originals.

On the backdoor pilot of The Originals, Klaus leaves Caroline a voicemail telling her that he hopes one day she’ll let him show her his favorite place in the world. After Caroline married Stefan, it seemed like that was something that would never happen.

But after Stefan’s death, Caroline visits Klaus in New Orleans and reveals that she kept his voicemail for fifteen years. She tells Klaus that he owes her a tour, and he finally gets to give it to her in The Originals series finale.
