The latest trailer for Rick and Morty season 5 previews the zany sci-fi stories that lie ahead for the titular mismatched pair. Since it first premiered in 2013, Rick and Morty has been praised for its sharp wit and tackling of various sci-fi tropes. In a major show of confidence in the series, Adult Swim renewed it for a whopping 70 episodes back in 2018, thus ensuring the show will stick around for a while. After lengthy hiatuses between the past few seasons, Rick and Morty season 5 will arrive with almost startling speed, even despite the pandemic disrupting major productions over the past year.
Rick and Morty season 5 will premiere on June 20, just over a year after the fourth season came to an end. Once again, drunken mad scientist Rick and his grandson, the meek Morty, will embark on new, wild adventures across space and time. Rick and Morty season 4 ended on an episode dealing with Space Beth, who will continue to factor into the show going forward. Overall, though, Rick and Morty looks like it will branch into some new territory for season 5.
On Sunday, Adult Swim unveiled the latest trailer for Rick and Morty season 5. The clip gets off to a memorable start, with the Smith household being surrounded by armed soldiers who call for Rick and Morty’s arrest. Then, set to Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage,” the rest of the season 5 trailer previews the excitement that’s to come, which involves the destruction of various American monuments, a Rick clone, and more ragging on Jerry. Check it out below.
Rick and Morty season 5 also seems poised to return to the show’s beloved parodies, some of which have been teased in the above trailer. This includes a Hellraiser episode and a Voltron-esque mission that involves the entire family, which is shown through multiple glimpses here. Additionally, this Rick and Morty trailer puts the spotlight on the show’s meta humor, such as the moment where Rick says he’s going to “deus ex machina this sh**.” The part where Morty comments on how little time he’s spent in school since Rick moved in also elicits laughs.
Rick and Morty will be sticking around for much longer than just season 5, so fans don’t have to worry about whether this will be the final season. In fact, a writer for the show commented earlier this year that they’ve already begun work on Rick and Morty season 7. Whether the story of season 5 will end up bleeding into future installments remains to be seen, but there’s already a great deal of excitement for what’s ahead. Luckily, it all kicks off next month.
