A special episode of HBO’S I’ll Be Gone In The Dark will release in June. The true-crime docuseries is based on writer Michelle McNamara’s book of the same name that explores the notorious Golden State Killer’s string of murders and the effort to identify the person behind the serial killings. Joseph DeAngelo became known as the infamous Golden State Killer for his crime spree across California in the ’70s and ’80s. He pleaded guilty in June 2020 to 13 counts of first-degree murder and 13 rape-related charges after evading authorities for decades. He also admitted to dozens of more crimes that were past the statute of limitations in a plea deal that spared him the death penalty. Though McNamara passed away before DeAngelo was arrested for his crimes, her persistence helped uncover the unsolved case. The first six parts of the series premiered on HBO in June 2020, and now the show is returning this summer.
HBO has announced a new hour-long episode of I’ll Be Gone In The Dark will premiere on June 21 at 10 p.m. The special episode directed by Elizabeth Wolff will explore the aftermath of the Golden State Killer’s arrest and conviction. According to HBO’s press release:
“This episode brings shocking new revelations to light in the Lombardo case and features the late McNamara’s own research into the rape and murder, which led to her return to Oak Park in 2013 to investigate it on the ground, quickly finding inconsistencies in the police work.”
The new episode will include the late McNamara’s own archival research and voice recordings, as well as interviews with residents of present-day Oak Park. The episode is a Story Syndicate Production and is executive produced by Liz Garbus, Dan Cogan, Michelle McNamara, Dave Rath and actor and comedian Patton Oswalt, who was married to McNamara.
Back in August, DeAngelo was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. That brought closure to the decades long case, while this new episode of I’ll Be Gone in the Dark will wrap up the story for its viewers. The inclusion of McNamara’s work, too, should prove a real draw seeing as her investigation into the murders helped build interest in the case. Not to mention, any new revelations about the Golden State Killer are sure to be shocking, even for those who’ve been following along for years. With all the developments since the HBO docuseries originally aired, the new episode of I’ll Be Gone in the Dark will be a can’t miss final installment of disturbing true crime tale.
