Take the ladies of Real Housewives of New York out of their natural habitat and all of a sudden they are concerned about propriety. Well, that’s not necessarily true for any of the trips they’ve been on. Ever. Except for last season’s getaway to Newport, Rhode Island for some inexplicable reason.
Maybe because it was Leah McSweeney’s freshman season, or because she invited her sister along. Something rubbed Ramona Singer the wrong way early on, and so the rest of the trip descended further and further into RHONY dysfunction. Leah tore curtains, interfered in Ramona’s flirtations, and ended up throwing ravioli at her. It was actually delightful to watch. But Ramona and Sonja Morgan were not as amused by Leah’s antics.
Dorinda Medley was the only one supporting Leah during her Pita Chip guy meltdown in Newport. And unfortunately, with Dorinda’s exit from the show, Leah will not have that maternal energy in her corner this season.
Leah told Stylecaster how she heard about Dorinda’s departure. “I found out at the same time as everyone else,” she said, “she’s obviously so beloved. She was really there for me last season. Not just on camera, but off camera.”
The Newport trip was an emotional tipping point for Leah. Veteran cast members Sonja and Ramona supposedly tried to pull their weight with Bravo executives to have her removed, though Leah did not specify if both ladies were involved.

Leah claimed that, “after Rhode Island, I left disheveled and broken. Ramona and Sonja didn’t want me on the show after that trip. They’re going to get so mad I’m saying this. There were phone calls made to executives saying I’m not a good fit.”
It’s not that Ramona and Sonja don’t get smashed and act foolish, but Leah looks a lot better doing it. At least she takes responsibility for it.
“I get too crazy when I drink, which is interesting considering how they get,” Leah said, “it was rough. I remember waking up and calling Dorinda being like, ‘I don’t feel good.’ She’s like, ‘I know that feeling. Don’t worry. It’s going to be fine. You’re going to go to this tea party and you’re going to make it right.’ She was very maternal in a lot of ways.”
The only other person in Leah’s corner was fellow cast member Tinsley Mortimer. Ironically, Dorinda and Tinsley were always at each other’s throats before Tinsley made a hasty exit for Chicago.

“Not having Tinsley on either,” Leah reflected, “those were my two confidants in a way, even though they hate each other, but whatever. I miss both of them.”
Now with both ladies gone, Leah is left to forge new dynamics within the group. But the Season 13 premiere indicates that she will be just fine with newbie Eboni K. Williams.
