Like many survival games, Valheim encourages players to have their Viking find, cook, and consume food throughout the day. Though Valheim’s survival system does not kill Vikings who don’t eat, having something to eat increases health, stamina, and health regeneration, which can be important while exploring. Fish offers strong buffs for Vikings, both when consumed on its own and when used as an ingredient in various recipes, including Fish Wraps, one of the best recipes in the game. To get Fish early in Valheim, Vikings need to get lucky enough to find a few critters washed up on the shore. Eventually, once they find Haldor, the merchant, in the Black Forest, they can buy a fishing rod and some bait.

Bait can quickly get expensive, and the current fishing mechanic in Valheim is a bit time-consuming. To combat this, Reddit user VincentNacon recently shared a new technique for building a Fish Trap that can allow Vikings to gather Fish in bulk, without bait or a fishing rod. The Trap relies on a mechanic that prevents fish from turning around in too small a space. It uses a series of 1×1 floor tiles and doors to trap fish and force them up a sort of funnel, right into a Viking’s waiting hands. This technique does not take too long and will only require some wood and stone, a Workbench, a Hammer, and a Hoe. Here’s how to build VincentNacon’s Fish Trap in Valheim.
How to Build the Fish Ramp in Valheim
To start building VincentNacon’s Fish Ramp Trap in Valheim, players will need to gather wood and construct a Workbench near where they want to place their Trap. This trick works best in the Meadows biome, where threats are not so severe as other environments, and near the ocean so players are guaranteed to find a lot of Fish right away.
Because the player will need to build on the ocean floor, it may be necessary to terraform a small land bridge using the Hoe, right beside the Trap. To do this, players can equip the Hoe and right-click, then choose Raise Ground. Each time they want to raise the ground will require four Stones.
To build the Trap, players need to build a makeshift staircase, like a ramp, using 1×1 floor tiles, starting on the ocean floor and ending on dry land. Placing a wall on either side of the floor tile ramp ensures a Viking can’t go through, but fish can. It also ensures the fish won’t be able to turn around once it is trapped. VincentNacon suggests stacking the floor tiles without the snap option enabled so the tiles stack in a stairstep pattern, rather than a flat line.
Players will then need to build a set of doors or gates one 1×1 tile away from the walls, giving it just enough room to swing in. When opened, these doors will clip through some of the wall but will push a Fish into the next part of the Trap. Once the Fish has been pushed up to dry land, the Viking can grab it; it is not possible to pick up a Fish while swimming, which is why the Fish Trap is necessary and effective.
Once these basics are covered, players can build the funnel shape seen in the final image above. Using walls and building a floor on top, players can ensure they don’t end up taking an inadvertent swim when trying to herd Fish. To use the Trap, the Viking needs to have enough stamina to jump in the water and scare a Fish or several toward the widest part of the funnel and into the narrow, 1×1 area. They can then jump up onto the structure and open the doors to push the Fish onto dry land, where they can grab it and cook it.
It can be difficult to visualize this technique, so players who are struggling can check out this video by LkPB Gameplay to get a sense of how this clever Valheim Fish Trap will work once built.
Valheim is in Steam Early Access and is available for PC.
