With Godzilla vs. Kong soon to be released, Mondo has unveiled its biggest Godzilla figure ever, standing at 18″ tall. The upcoming film will release on both HBO Max and in theaters on March 25 and has already become a pop culture phenomenon. Fanatics across the Internet have been arguing for months now over which of the two giant monsters will win, settling the age-old question that has been debated in countless schoolyards. Japan’s King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) previously tackled the much-pondered hypothetical, though this latest entry produced entirely by Hollywood will not be a remake and place the title of King of Monsters up for grabs.

Though the only real contenders for the title are, of course, Godzilla and King Kong, the larger multimedia MonsterVerse has introduced countless friends and foes of theirs towering over mankind. Godzilla himself has undergone multiple variants and redesigns over the years since the 1954 film of the same name. Indeed, Godzilla vs. Kong will be the 36th film in the Godzilla franchise.
To coincide with the much-hyped title, Mondo is releasing an 18″ figure of Godzilla 89, as reported by Bloody Disgusting. Debuting in 1989’s Godzilla vs. Biollante, Godzilla 89 emphasizes the bulky musculature of the famous beast. Mondo will make the figure available for preorder starting March 23, two days ahead of the film. Though there’s no price point yet confirmed, the figure is billed as a Premium Scale Statue and is Mondo’s biggest Godzilla model yet. Those facts should give fans a sense of the budget. It’s no wonder that merchandise is coming in droves ahead of the Godzilla vs. Kong release. A cynic would likely point out the inevitability of merchandising, but eager collectors are being spoiled. The figure is very nicely detailed and appears to have a solid base – it’s a sturdy collector’s item. Such a lovingly crafted figure brings to mind the original film, which was shot using a tiny Godzilla and a miniature replica of Tokyo. As Godzilla and King Kong duke it out in neon-tinted CGI glory, one can only marvel at how far the cinematic arts have come since that time.
The trailers for Godzilla vs. Kong indicate that there can only be one Alpha Titan. Whichever one wins, fans can be sure that neither one is going anywhere anytime soon. Nearly 90 years after the original King Kong debuted, the two monsters are still dual reigning monarchs of the monster movie genre. Across films, cartoons, video games, and collectibles, the future looks bright for the MonsterVerse.
