There’s a lot of romances to be had on this series, and fans have certainly seen them crash and burn or bloom and flourish. Of course, it’s also safe to say that lovers of this show wish they could be the ones dating Cece or Jess or Aly – but how great of girlfriends are they really? It’s time to rank the characters of this show, based on how girlfriend-worthy they truly are.

10 Kim

New Girl Kim Office

Everyone will probably remember Kim as the incredibly ambitious, hot-headed, and kind of terrifying boss of Schmidt. She’s a woman with a lot of strength and independence, but she’s also a bit alarming when it comes to manipulating men and her employees.

As is pretty obvious with her short stint with Schmidt, Kim isn’t exactly girlfriend material. She seems more than capable of running a successful company, and while she’s a bit mean, Schmidt could have done worse.

9 Nadia

New Girl Schmidt & Nadia

Nadia is one of everyone’s favorite supporting characters that they just love to hate. She’s hilarious, but it’s honestly just because she’s completely obsessed with herself. She’s good entertainment – but that’s it.

This woman is pretty selfish, and she really shows no care for anyone or anything. She doesn’t have a kind heart, and she’s overly involved with looks and a ‘fun time.’ For an actual long-term girlfriend, Nadia isn’t a great choice.

8 Reagan

New Girl Reagan

It’s next to impossible for any fan to say they didn’t have a crush on Reagan. She’s fiery, funny, witty, independent, spontaneous, and totally gorgeous. She’s the whole package – at least on paper. Really though, Reagan has a lot of relationship question marks.

From commitment issues to trouble letting others in to struggling to really caring about other people, Reagan falls a bit short for those looking for a serious girlfriend that would actually be a good partner. She’s great all on her own, though.

7 Fawn

New Girl Jess & Fawn Golfing

If there’s another slightly unlikeable character that all fans love, it’s definitely Fawn Moscato. Schmidt and her date to appease voters and the media, and it’s clear their relationship is mainly staged to help their reputations.

This definitely turns fans off from wanting Fawn as a girlfriend, but she is also definitely hilarious, intelligent, and strong. Anyone could do worse than Fawn, but she’s not exactly a top choice when it comes to a supportive partner.

6 Caroline

New Girl Caroline at Wedding

There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Nick and Caroline were just not meant to be together. They had a toxic and unhealthy on-and-off-again relationship. However, that doesn’t mean Caroline is exactly a terrible person.

In fact, things seem pretty normal and healthy when Nick is about to move in with her. Of course, everyone was glad he didn’t, but that doesn’t mean that another guy or gal couldn’t appreciate the smart and well-rounded Caroline.

5 Sadie

New Girl Nick, Jess & Sadie at Doctor Office

Sadie is one character that kind of just vanishes, but that doesn’t mean true fans of this show will ever forget her. She’s totally smart and has a great job as a gynecologist. She’s also pretty confident in herself and has a bubbly and fun personality.

Of all the characters on the show, fans probably wish they got to know Sadie a bit better, and there’s nothing really to dislike about her. From all they know about her, she seems like she’d be a great girlfriend.

4 May

New Girl Coach & May Hug

May is another character that fans only got a brief moment to really see on their screens. However, she does steal Coach’s heart, and that says a lot in itself. May is strong-willed, smart, elegant, talented, and absolutely stunning.

She’s definitely checking off all the boxes on everyone’s list of wishes for a long-term partner. Fans do know she’s a bit hesitant and a little reserved, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t a superstar girlfriend – which she clearly is to Coach.

3 Aly

New Girl Aly & Winston At Loft

It’s hard to think of a better duo on this show than Aly and Winston. Aly is bursting with fire and sass, but she’s also super kind, intelligent as they come, and admirably strong and independent. Sure, she’s a bit rough around the edges, but after starting to date Winston, she was nothing but the best partner.

Aly is totally girlfriend material for those that aren’t looking to mess around and want someone that can live their own life AND have a strong partnership. She’s a catch, and while she isn’t at the top of this list, everyone would be happy to date her.

2 Jess

New Girl Jess in Loft

There’s probably not a character as quirky and sweet as Jessica Day in TV history. She’s fully herself, which means she’s always loving, selfless, strong, confident, smart, and absolutely hilarious. Nick and Jess’s relationship proves she’s a great girlfriend.

Of course, fans know she can be a bit overbearing, but it’s only because she cares. When it comes down to it, Jess has the biggest heart, and she really only cares about love and the people around her.

1 Cece

New Girl Cece & Schmidt Final Season

There probably isn’t anyone that’s more girlfriend material than Cece. This probably isn’t true of her at first, but over her character growth, Cece proves that she’s an absolutely incredible woman and a stellar and supportive partner.

She’s fun, spontaneous, and not at all controlling, but she’s also super intelligent, ambitious, caring, and totally fiery. Cece is the whole package, and Schmidt should certainly consider himself the luckiest guy on the planet.
