Is God Of War’s New Game Actually Called Ragnarok | Screen Rant

One of PlayStation 5’s most anticipated games is the sequel to 2018’s God of War. The series from Santa Monica Studio has been a PlayStation staple since the first game released on PS2, and the reboot features one of the PlayStation’s best protagonists. Ever since its reveal during the PS5 Showcase in September 2020, the gaming community has been referring to the God of War sequel as “God of War: Ragnarök.” But is that the game’s actual name? Well, maybe.

For now, Ragnarök seems to simply be a placeholder name fans have chosen to use until the game’s actual title is revealed. Neither Santa Monica nor Sony has announced the actual title for the sequel, but they also haven’t denied the Ragnarök subtitle. In fact, there has been no information at all since the teaser trailer at the PS5 Showcase, and the upcoming God of War was noticeably absent from PlayStation’s recent State of Play. The initial teaser trailer is where this placeholder title comes from; the words “Ragnarök is coming” appeared before dissolving and being replaced with “2021.

The new God of War game is still slated to come out in 2021, but with games being delayed industry-wide, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Santa Monica pushes it back into 2022. There hasn’t been news of any development struggles, but game director Cory Barlog said God of War will release “when it’s done.” Although some may be growing impatient, it’s probably a good sign the next God of War is getting as much attention as it requires.

Is Ragnarök Coming In The Next God Of War On PS5?

Near the end of God of War, Mimir tells Kratos Ragnarök is the event that brings about “the end of the bloody world.” Given Kratos’ penchant for slaughtering deities in past God of War games, there seems to be a pretty high likelihood he will at least be partly responsible for Ragnarök. However, in the 2018 God of War, Kratos is trying very hard to leave his violent past behind him and to raise his son Atreus to learn from his past mistakes.

There haven’t been any story details revealed about the God of War sequel just yet, so it’s impossible to tell whether or not the game will take place during Ragnarök (or before it). When discussing Ragnarök, Mimir informs Kratos a winter has started that will span three summers, signaling the beginning of the world-ending event. The sequel might make a time jump to bring the game’s setting closer to the start of Ragnarök proper, but there are probably events that will transpire in the meantime with regards to Kratos. He did kill Baldur, after all, and the other Norse gods probably won’t just ignore that. The alternative is that the trailer’s Ragnarök is coming” phrase is just meant to provide a sense of foreboding, and the sequel to God of War will focus on Kratos’ prophecy-changing actions leading up to doomsday.
