Overwatch, one of Blizzard’s popular online multiplayer games, is free to play until January 4. Despite being released in 2016, Overwatch has been in the news quite a bit lately. It even received a surprise new map earlier this month. The new map is called Kanezaka, and it’s situated just below the existing Hanamura map. Game Director Jeff Kaplan said that players can even look up to see Hanamura’s castle. On top of this, there are apparently some Easter eggs related to Overwatch 2 hiding in Kanezaka.
Aside from the original game, there has been a healthy amount of conjecture surrounding its highly anticipated sequel, Overwatch 2. It was initially unveiled at BlizzCon 2019, and not much else has been shared regarding the game since its reveal. In the same video in which Kanezaka was announced, Kaplan said he understood that there’s been a drought of Overwatch 2 news. However, he also mentioned that fans will know more about the game in February at BlizzCon 2021.

In the meantime, Overwatch is free to play until January 4 as a free trial. Fans can play as much Overwatch as they want completely free of charge until that early January deadline. Additionally, the game is on sale on Blizzard’s website for 25 percent off. It was $19.99, but now players can purchase it for $14.99. Overwatch: Legendary Edition is also on sale on Blizzard’s website, but for an even bigger discount at 50 percent off. It was originally $39.99, but now fans can buy it for $19.99.
This is a smart move on Blizzard’s part. Discounted prices and a free trial of the original Overwatch will unequivocally generate excitement for its sequel without the company being forced to pay for advertising with the game itself reportedly still far from release. Video game enthusiasts who haven’t been able to play Overwatch yet can now do so for free, so if fans are interested, it’s definitely worth checking out. Even if players don’t want to spend the money on the discounted version, it’ll be fun to play it for free for the next couple of weeks.
It’s also strategic for Blizzard to have a more significant discount for Overwatch: Legendary Edition. The company likely imagines that fans will want to take advantage of this temporary discount if they’ve been considering purchasing Overwatch. For only $5 extra, players can get their hands on much more content, and Blizzard understands this incentive. While everyone is waiting for Overwatch 2 and the original game’s new map to release, it’s worth checking out this free trial. Some fans may even end up purchasing the full game if they have a positive experience during the trial.
