Warning: This article contains spoilers for Black Cat #1

The Black Cat smashes into the King in Black in the first issue of her new ongoing book—literally! The master thief meets the master of symbiotes in Black Cat #1 by writer Jed Mackay and artist C.F. Villa. The issue, with a cover by Pepe Larraz, is in stores now.

Black Cat, AKA Felicia Hardy, is a long-time associate of Spider-Man. First appearing in 1979’s Amazing Spider-Man #194, the two have even been lovers at times. A morally ambiguous thief, the Black Cat can subtly manipulate probability fields, which gives her the illusion of creating “bad luck” for her targets. She received her own title in late 2019 which ran for 12 issues, before being put on a brief hiatus. Now the Cat has returned in a brand-new book, just in time for Marvel’s King in Black mega event. Spinning out of Venom, the King in Black is the story of the symbiote god Knull and his quest to snuff out the light of creation.

In a preview provided to Comic Book Resources, the Cat is stalking two criminals who have already committed a heist; her intention being to steal whatever they have. Just as she goes in for the kill, Knull attacks Earth. Readers of King in Black #1 will remember he walked right through the Avengers and the X-Men’s defenses, even ripping the Sentry, one of the most powerful beings on Earth, in half. All of this hits right as the Cat is about to make her big score. A symbiote dragon crashes through the tunnel she was in, knocking the Cat unconscious. The preview ends there, but a solicitation reveals she is not going to take this lying down and concocts a scheme to steal something of great value to Knull—but stops short of telling fans what (or who) it is. Check out the cover art and solicitation details below:

Captain America! And Doctor Strange! DO NOT MISS IT!!!32 PGS. /Rated T+ …$3.99

The Black Cat is a master thief who has her own moral code; she views Knull’s attack on Earth as something that thwarts her agenda, hence the reason she will join the heroes in their attempt to stop him. Once Knull is vanquished, she will no doubt return to her thieving ways.

Part of the character’s appeal is watching the opposing sides of the Black Cat play out—she is a master thief, but also one of Spider-Man’s quasi-allies. This new title, where she will steal something of great value in the fight against Knull, promises to explore that as well. The previous Black Cat title was a fan-favorite, and this one no doubt will be too.
