Next year’s animated series “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” will mark the return of the beloved franchise after 30 years, but what about the return of the *film* franchise?
We’ve been hearing rumblings about a live-action Gremlins 3 for many, many years now, with the original film’s scribe Chris Columbus revealing a while back that he has written a script. So what’s the latest on all that? Speaking with Collider, Columbus provides an update.
“I would love to do it. I wrote a script, so there is an existing script,” Columbus tells the site this week. “We’re working out some rights issues right now, so we’re just trying to figure out when the best time to make that film would be.”
He continues, “I would still do it the same way – I would do it as tangible puppets, not CGI. Maybe having — you know we had one stop-motion scene in the first Gremlins, but I don’t think I’d use much CGI in Gremlins 3.”
For now, this sounds like another non-update. But with the animated series headed to HBO Max next year, likely to revive interest in the franchise, well, the future is looking bright.
Here’s hoping we have something a bit more substantial to report real soon.
