AV Super Sunshine Drops New Single (feat. Tommy Tutone)

Celebrity, Fashion, Music, News

AV Super Sunshine is a performer, singer, and songwriter with his own style. You can go back over his past recordings and find echoes of other artists but Sunshine filters any and all influences through an individual consciousness. There is immense style in his presentation too. Longtime producer and fellow musician Michael Bradford, known for work with Kid Rock and Deep Purple among others, is once again an excellent creative partner for AV Super Sunshine’s musical ideas. It is Sunshine leading the way, without question, but Bradford’s contributions to tracks such as the new single “X File: 867-5309” and previous releases adds further flair to an impressive and growing discography. The latest single rates among AV Super Sunshine’s best yet.

The story behind this track is interesting. Tommy Tutone vocalist Tommy Heath mentioned to former manager and promotion guru Stephen Wrench about how he hoped to find a modern performer interested in putting his master recording for the hook in “867-5309/Jenny” to work in a fresh context. Wrench seized on the idea and broached it with AV Super Sunshine; his instincts about the compatibility of artist and music are unerring. Sunshine and Bradford discovered the right spot for the hook in the bridge of a track AV Super Sunshine was working on at the time and this is the result.

Sunshine divides the single into two mixes. He deems the second a “dance” mix and it is much longer and more physically involving than the first. Over six minutes long, the dance mix gives Sunshine and Bradford the opportunity to fully exploit the cut’s dramatic potential. It has an exhilarating pace as well that sweeps listeners along on a tide of music and sound. I enjoy the airiness of the dance mix despite how much it has going on musically; it is no easy thing to achieve and maintain such across the board balance between a variety of musical instruments. The underlying sound is electronic in nature, but there are traditional instruments in play as well. Opening it with some deceptively lyrical piano is a nice touch.

he first mix is shorter than the second. It has a slower tempo as well, but AV Super Sunshine gives established fans and new listeners alike the same satisfying experience. It has a different flavor, to be sure, but the two tracks share the same electronic inclinations mixed with other complementary strands. It takes a rare level of skill from vocalists, performers, and producers to be able to re-envision a musical composition the way AV Super Sunshine and Michael Bradford do on a consistent basis. Once again, their work together strikes a modern and retro chord without sounding imitative or otherwise heavy-handed. “X File: 867-5309” goes a step further, however, by reclaiming a memorable moment in popular music’s past, like a snippet of “found art”, and successfully reincorporates it into our shared present. It’s another entertaining release from AV Super Sunshine and you can rest assured there are more to come.
