Black Widow Movie Images Reveal First Look At OT Fagbenle’s Character

Movies

Marvel Studios unveils the first look at O.T. Fagbenle’s Black Widow character, Mason. The Scarlett Johansson and Cate Shortland film has been pushed to a May 2021 release date after the coronavirus pandemic disrupted Hollywood’s production and release time table on top of its global repercussions. As a result, there hasn’t been any MCU film for more than a year now since Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home effectively wrapped the Infinity Saga last year.

Black Widow will be the first project out of MCU’s Phase 4 slate and will give Natasha Romanoff her long-overdue solo adventure. In order to work around the character’s tragic death in Endgame, the movie takes place in the two years between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Given its prequel nature, it will retroactively introduce some of the key figures in Nat’s life before she became a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and eventually an Avenger, including David Harbour’s Alexei Shoskatov/Red Guardian, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Rachel Weisz’s Melina. One other confirmed cast member from the film, however, is Fagbenle’s Mason, who has been largely absent from Black Widow‘s marketing.

Thanks to the release of Marvel’s Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book (via @Bob89507867), however, fans can now get their first look at the character. Aside from a few photos of Mason, which include a snap of him with Natasha, the selection also has other images from the film — both promo stills and BTS snaps. Check them out below:

It has always been interesting why Marvel Studios would exclude Mason from their Black Widow marketing. There’s also very little known about how he fits into all of this; the only official information about him is that he is Natasha’s old colleague from her S.H.I.E.L.D. days, who is romantically interested in her. Unfortunately, the images do not give any additional context as to the role he plays in the narrative, although the snap of him and Natasha seemingly checks out with the idea that he likes her. The decision to not reveal much about Mason fueled rumors that he might be playing Taskmaster — the primary villain of Black Widow whose identity is also still a mystery. Whether or not this is the case is uncertain for now, but Fagbenle was coy about the matter when previously asked about it.

Depending on when Marvel’s Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book was really supposed to be released, it’s curious if it includes pertinent details about Mason or the movie in general. Typically, special art books like this are rolled out after its corresponding film hit theaters, but because the MCU Phase 4 movie was significantly pushed back to May 2021, it’s possible that they didn’t have any choice but to drop this prior to the film’s release. Marketing for Black Widow has already been stretched out too long; anything more than what they revealed about it thus far could already spoil the whole film.
