You can say a lot of things about rapper and impresario DawgGoneDavis, but one thing you can’t say is that she gives up. “No More”, Davis’ latest concoction is a blending of killer melodic guitar riffs, passionate backup vocals and Davis’ whimsical spoken word/rap stylings. You might call her style and her image a bit non-traditional for the indie rap world, but this Christian rapper grips the listener with her far-off stories, and sometimes disjointed lyrics. Still, it works and she keeps the spins going. “No More” is not surprisingly or surprisingly depending on what side of the coin you land, another solid addition to her growing discography.

I’ll be damn, I married the wrong man, Davis raps. She sings with a bit of the Midwest colloquialism, with her voice having just a slight Missourian accent. Davis is based in Kansas City, Missouri. Her backing vocalist, Chago Williams, hails from Long Beach, California. He really adds gusto and depth to the tune with his no more, no more chorus. He adds a bit of that California love to the vibe, and The song also contains awesome guitar riffs from Romain Duchein. Powerful and adding yet another cool layer to “No More”, it almost opens the song into something you might hear from Van Halen or Aerosmith. Still, Davis maintains her push and alas, the song is squared right into the rap genre.
Davis does mention the Lord and Jesus in her tune. She’s known for being a Christian rapper. Jesus is Lord, don’t cut the cord, Jesus is dope, I only hope, she raps. She’s a bit muffled, so after a few listens, I came to that conclusion on her lyrics. She’s so fun, though, that it’s hard to be disappointed or disenchanted with her delivery. Davis grows on you and while you’re ready for her next verse, you’re still smiling from her last. It’s like ‘what’s coming out of her mouth next’. She’s endearing in that way. She might be vulnerable and revealing a lot about her own life and her own marriage, but she still has a way of connecting with the listener and not letting them feel alone. She’s not patronizing nor is she lecturing – she’s just giving her truth. She’s lived a full life already and she’s warning her listeners. She’s reached the point where she’s not making any more mistakes – no more. Besides, even with her words and her storytelling, it’s Williams’ no more chorus that cements itself into your brain. You cannot escape his singing. It’s almost like he’s the angel on your shoulder shaking his head singing no more.

If you’re new to the DawgGoneDavis universe, have a seat and get to listening. Davis is sure to catch your ear and in her track “No More” you might actually find yourself wanting more. Stay patient with her and she might just convert you to one of her many, many listeners. “No More” is another hit. It’s also refreshing to hear that she’s making more music with Williams and Duchein. Between the three of them, they are making some very cool music.
