Emmys 2020: The Apollo Wins Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special

Music, News

Roger Ross Williams’ The Apollo, a documentary about Harlem’s historic Apollo Theater that aired on HBO, won the Emmy tonight for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special. The doc beat out Spike Jonze’s Beastie Boys Story, Netflix’s Michelle Obama documentary Becoming, Laurel Canyon: A Place in Time, and The Great Hack.

“The Apollo stage has always been a place that has amplified our struggle, our triumphs, and our incredible artistry,” Williams said in his acceptance speech. “As Ta-Nehisi Coates says in the film, ‘Our music is so beautiful that even those with their boots on our necks can’t help but sing along.’ Thank you.”
