Legends of Tomorrow season 6 is adding to their ranks, casting Lisseth Chavez to play an alien expert. As an ensemble show, Legends of Tomorrow has accustomed fans to casting changes over the years, with several main cast members departing during or after season 5, including Maisie Richardson-Sellers, who portrayed shapeshifter Charlie. The finale of season 5 did introduce a new element to the series, though, which the new casting news directly addresses.
At the conclusion of last season’s finale, everything seemed to be turning out alright for the Legends. Out of nowhere, however, team captain Sara Lance was seemingly abducted by aliens, unbeknownst to the rest of the team. While the ragtag group of heroes has dealt with any number of anomalies in the universe, aliens are not a subject that’s really been touched upon by the show. If the team is going to tackle this new enemy – presumably without their fearless captain to start – they’re going to need someone who knows something about aliens.

Enter Esperanza “Spooner” Cruz. An announcement during the Legends of Tomorrow panel at Saturday’s virtual DC FanDome revealed a new character, Cruz, who believes herself to be telepathically linked to aliens after an unforgettable childhood encounter. The character description lists her as a potential recruit to the Waverider.
Chavez is the most significant new name ahead of season 6 of Legends of Tomorrow, but it’s far from the only casting news for the show. Shayan Sobhian, who played Behrad last season, has been promoted to a series regular. Astra, played by Olivia Swann, has also been promoted to season regular. The original team from the first season of the show is virtually nonexistent at this point, behind held down only by Sara Lance and Mick Rory. We’ll have to see if Spooner Cruz is destined to be a long-term member of the Waverider, or just another one-off for the Legends of Tomorrow.
While not everyone will have heard of Chavez, she has had some big role in her career, most notably as Officer Vanessa Rojas on Chicago P.D. Chavez has proven herself as an actress through her multiple TV show appearances, but she is also clearly already dedicated to Legends of Tomorrow. After the casting news broke, Chavez took to Instagram to celebrate, noting that she was “grateful for the opportunity” to join the series. She also left Chicaggo P.D. to join Legends of Tomorrow, which was one of her more successful roles to date. In short, fans, and the crew of the Waverider, will be lucky to have Chavez playing an alien expert in Legends of Tomorrow season 6.
