The Bachelorette: Becca Kufrin Confirms Split From Fiancé Garrett Yrigoyen

Movies

Former star of The Bachelorette Becca Kufrin has confirmed her split with fiancé Garrett Yrigoyen. The pair met on Becca’s season of The Bachelorette, where she gave him her final rose among a media storm sparked by resurfaced posts that Garrett liked and retweeted. The posts were homophobic and riddled with racial slurs which, back in 2018, Garrett apologized for. Becca made sure audiences knew the posts did not reflect her own beliefs.

The couple overcame their rocky start, despite speculations surrounding their long engagement of two and a half years. They shared their romance with the world through various social media posts, including moving into their Carlsbad home together last year. In June 2020, the couple went through another test to their relationship after Garrett took to Instagram to show support for police officers by posting a black square with a blue line through it coupled with a lengthy statement supporting “the boys in blue.” The post came after an outpouring of support for the Black Lives Matter movement following the death of George Floyd in May. Many were outraged at the 31-year-old’s statement, calling it a blatant disrespect to the movement. Among those who called out Garett was former Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay. Rachel condemned the post and took to her “Bachelor Happy Hour” podcast, which she shares with Becca, to discuss the loaded racist undertones of the post.

Becca responded to the backlash on the podcast, explaining how her difference of views from her fiancé was creating divides in their relationship, “I was dealing with trying to first wrap my head around that, and also dealing with discord within my relationship and what it was causing between my family.” She also told fans that she was unsure of the future of her relationship. The “discord” spawned a whirlwind of rumors that the couple had split, fueled by Becca’s move to a new home and an unidentified source who leaked that the couple ended their engagement on August 6th. Becca kept mostly silent on the situation, neither confirming nor denying the rumors…until now. On an episode of “Bachelor Happy Hour“, which Rachel was not present for, the former Bachelorette emotionally stated, “I don’t think it’s going to come as a shock to anyone, but Garrett and I have decided to end our engagement.”

She went on to explain, “After many conversations, we came to this decision. It wasn’t something that we just arrived at one night.” The 30-year-old clarified the details around the breakup, “It wasn’t based solely off of one Instagram post or somebody else’s opinions or comments. There’s much more to it. To any relationship, there’s a lot of layers, and it’s not for me to divulge details. It’s no one’s business other than what I’m telling you right now.”

While the couple’s relationship has been on unstable grounds for months, Becca seems to still have found a way to find the light in the darkness, explaining that she is, “so grateful … to have had the two-plus years.” She went on, “Just because we’ve arrived at this decision now doesn’t take away all of the years and the countless memories that we’ve made together. I will always look back at this time in my life with so much gratitude and love.”
