Mortar, The Charged Golem is one of Undermine‘s most intimidating bosses. Most would be deeply unnerved by seeing a massive pile of ordinary rocks rise up and begin floating around the room, following a bolt of lightning. Our player character takes it without missing a beat. Unfortunately, players aren’t always able to keep the same level of composure as our fictional counterparts.
Bosses in the game are often about managing distance between the boss and the player, memorizing patterns, and staying alert. This boss in particular is adept at forcing the player to hone all of those skills to absolute perfection. This boss combines massively powerful attacks with the ability to come at the player from multiple directions at once. This is definitely a fun challenge for players. Here’s how to take down Mortar, The Charged Golem in Undermine.

Defeating Mortar, The Charged Golem in Undermine
When the player enters the boss room, Mortar will be sitting motionlessly in the center of the room. After a short power-up sequence, immediately begin striking at the floating blue orbs that orbit the boss. These are the central weak points for this encounter, so do your best to keep them in range at all times. The common first move for this boss is to float out of the way while bringing two powerful arms down on the player one after another. Keep moving during this. If the player gets too close to the boss, they may find themselves unable to get out of the way to a safe location.
The player’s ultimate objective is to destroy all of the orbs surrounding the boss. The trick here is to take any available opportunities to attack the blue orbs immediately after every major attack made by the boss. As soon as the arms return to the boss’s side, strike the orbs. The player should be able to clear at least one of the orbs at this point. From here the boss will either send the orbs around the room while electrifying them or deliver a powerful laser beam attack across the room. Avoid the orbs using the same method as avoiding the rock arms, and jump over the laser just before impact.
The challenge here is that the player is often expected to do many of these things at the same time. Players will need to carefully manage their space and their timing in order to survive this particular fight. Keep sharp and everything should be fine from here until the end of the fight. This boss has no surprise move sets that they employ at the end, so don’t worry too much.
