New Bill & Ted 3 Actors Hadn’t Seen First Two Movies Before Auditioning

Movies

Bill & Ted Face the Music stars Brigette Lundy-Paine and Samara Weaving reveal they hadn’t seen the first two movies in the franchise before auditioning. The upcoming third film will reunite Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves as the titular Bill and Ted. However, as the movie comes almost 30 years after Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, this time around, the characters will be joined by their kids. Lundy-Paine will play Ted’s child, Billie, while Weaving was cast as Bill’s kid, Thea. In Bill & Ted Face the Music, the main characters have to write the perfect song in order to save the world, with others helping them along the way. Since it’s been so long since the release of the second film, many are eager to see what Bill and Ted have been up to over the years.

Unfortunately, Bill & Ted Face the Music is one of the many movies impacted by the coronavirus. Though its release date hasn’t changed by very much, it’s held three different release dates in August. However, earlier this week, Orion Pictures revealed the movie will now release on September 1, with one important change. Planned for a solely theatrical release until now, Bill & Ted Face the Music will debut On Demand the same day as its release. A full-length trailer and poster for the movie also dropped this week, providing a look at a few new moments from the film.

To promote Bill & Ted Face the Music ahead of its release, the cast, director, and writers appeared on a Comic-Con@Home panel moderated by Kevin Smith. In the video, released on Comic-Con International‘s YouTube channel, Lundy-Paine and Weaving were asked about their auditions, with both actors revealing they hadn’t seen the first two movies in the franchise beforehand:

Lundy-Paine: For myself personally, I had never seen the movie, and I didn’t want to see it before I went in because I just wanted to kind of go in blind. But I watched like a two second clip of what their voices sounded like and then went in and was just as goofy as possible.

Weaving: I hadn’t seen the films either…I unfortunately was born in ’92 so a little before my time.

Though Smith was surprised by these reveals, the actors’ comments make sense. Weaving, who’s Australian, went on to explain she thinks the movies are more of an American cultural phenomenon, but said she watched both after getting an email about her audition. Meanwhile, Lundy-Paine’s mention of wanting to enter their audition without being too familiar with the first two films echoes what other performers have expressed about entering big franchises or participating in reboots. Oftentimes, it’s less intimidating for actors to simply look at the character on the page and not get caught up in the expectations that come with knowing a film series well.

In the case of Bill & Ted Face the Music, a detailed knowledge of the first two movies may not have been a benefit for the incoming actors. After all, it’s been a long time since the most recent movie in the franchise, so the upcoming film will have to stand on its own. Bill and Ted’s kids also represent a new generation of fans who may check out Bill & Ted Face the Music without seeing the first two films. In that way, it makes sense the new actors took a similar approach.
