When will the next Psych movie release, and what will it be about? Psych 2: Lassie Come Home released on NBC’s own in-house streaming service, Peacock. It was the second reunion movie featuring the cast of the popular USA series that ended in 2014 after eight seasons.
Psych 2: Lassie Come Home reunited Shawn (James Roday), Gus (Dulé Hill), Juliet (Maggie Lawson), Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson), Woody (Kurt Fuller), and Henry (Corbin Bernsen) for a new mystery involving Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), who was critically injured in a shooting. The movie focuses on what happens after Shawn and Gus return to the old Psych office in Santa Barbara to get to the bottom of who shot Lassiter and why. Over the course of the story, the two investigate clues, get chased by a gang of “Viking bikers”, all the while keeping it a secret from Juliet. The movie also featured Joel McHale, Sarah Chalke, Richard Schiff, Kadeem Hardison, and Jazmyn Simon in key roles. Recurring Psych characters Buzz McNab (Sage Brocklebank), Marlowe (Kristy Swanson), and Mary (Jimmi Simpson) all made brief appearances as well.

The new Psych movie was perhaps the most highly-anticipated launch title on Peacock. Due to the popularity of the USA series, more sequels could follow. Psych creator Steve Franks expressed an interest in making several sequels back in 2017. There’s already talk about a third movie possibly happening, but it will of course depend on how well Psych 2: Lassie Comes Home performs on Peacock [via Deadline]. Here’s what to expect from a potential Psych 3.
Psych 3 Release Date Info
Psych 3 could release sometime between 2022 and 2023, though 2022 feels more likely. Psych 2: Lassie Come Home launched on Peacock three years after Psych: The Movie in 2017, but the situation may be different in the case of Psych 3. It’s important to note that the original plan for Psych 2 was for it to release in 2019, but it was pushed back to 2020 in September, possibly so that its release could coincide with Peacock’s launch on July 15. For this reason, only a two-year wait may be necessary. Also, Psych 3 is sure to be yet another Peacock Original.
Psych 3 Story Details
So far, each Psych movie has been a standalone story. Psych 2: Lassie Comes Home advanced the story of the characters by showing Shawn and Juliet as a married couple now, Gus and Selene (Jazmyn Simon) still in a romantic relationship, and revealed what happened to the rescue dog they tried to give to Chief Vick in the first film. But for the most part, it was a new story unconnected to the main plot of its predecessor. It’s likely that the same will be true for Psych 2 and Psych 3, especially since the second film provided a proper conclusion to the storyline with Lassiter. One key development in the movie that is expected to be important in the sequel is the reveal that Selene is now pregnant. Gus and Selene became engaged at the end of the movie. If Psych 3 includes another time skip, the movie could involve Gus dealing with fatherhood.
