Here’s what viewers can expect from Search Party season 4, including a renewal status, possible release date, and story details. The dark comedy from Sarah-Violet Bliss, Charles Rogers, and Michael Showalter (Wet Hot American Summer) first debuted on TBS in 2016. After premiering a follow-up season on TBS, it was announced that the series was renewed for season 3 but it would move to HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s streaming service. After a two-and-a-half-year hiatus, the series starring Alia Shawkat, John Reynolds, John Early, and Meredith Hagner finally returned for the highly-anticipated season 3.

Search Party follows the lives of Dory Sief (Shawkat), her boyfriend Drew Gardner (Reynolds), and the pair’s two closest friends, Elliott Goss (Early) and Portia Davenport (Hagner). In Search Party season 1, Dory puts her focus on finding the group’s missing college classmate until they end up killing a private investigator named Keith Powell (Ron Livingston). Season 2 centers on the death’s cover-up and the issues Dory and the others face trying to return to their normal lives.
Search Party season 3 was filmed back in 2018 but the installment was held until the debut of HBO Max. It picked up just where season 2 left off with Dory trying to tie up any loose ends connecting her and her friends to Keith’s death. Unfortunately, Dory and Drew are arrested and tried for Keith’s mysterious murder. They then encounter a roller-coaster case as their newfound fame starts to affect the group’s mental state. Even though Dory finds freedom when it comes to the murder trial, she gets herself stuck in another mess due to a dangerous stalker.
Search Party Was Already Renewed For Season 4
Viewers of Search Party will be happy to know that the series was already renewed for season 4. In fact, the renewal news came in 2019, months before HBO Max was even set to launch. The new streamer not only intended to be the new home of Search Party, but it also had hopes in expanding the story of Dory, Drew, Elliott, and Portia. Aside from the new seasons, HBO Max features the first two seasons of the series with the goal of finding a bigger audience for the former TBS title.
Search Party Season 4 Release Date
There’s no word on a potential Search Party season 4 release date. The good news is that filming already took place from December 2019 to February 2020. Due to the fact that the bulk of production already occurred, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the upcoming season drop on HBO Max in early 2021. This could potentially make up for the long hiatus that came with the move to the streamer. If not, HBO Max could also look to make Search Party one of their summer series, keeping season 4 for a 2021 release in June of July.
Search Party Season 4 Story Details
Search Party season 4 certainly has plenty to focus on, especially when it comes to the cliffhanger involving Dory. After being found not guilty in the murder of Keith, Dory becomes a free woman. That is until she returns to her apartment where she’s kidnapped by her stalker. Dory is then seen chained up with a newly shaved head, being kept in an undisclosed location. Drew, who is also found not guilty, wants nothing to do with Dory since he can no longer trust her or her mental state. Elliott and Portia are no longer in trouble, but they, too, are struggling with trust issues. The one-time tight-knit group is completely fractured, but they might need to come together to save Dory. When Search Party returns, viewers can expect a new investigation of a missing person, but this time around, the group will be looking for Dory.
