How Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy Are Related | Screen Rant

In the Wizarding World, almost every family is related to each other somehow – and Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy are a good example of that. Although these two were enemies during their time at Hogwarts, they actually had a few things in common, including some relatives. In 1997, J.K. Rowling introduced readers to the Wizarding World in the novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first in a series of seven books that told the story of “the boy who lived” and the darkest wizard of all, Lord Voldemort.

Although Voldemort was the main villain, Harry had to deal with many other not-so-friendly characters, most notably the Malfoys. Harry and Draco were the same age, and started their Hogwarts course the same year. Their rivalry was settled from the beginning, when Draco insulted Ron and his family and thus Harry refused to shake his hand. Harry and Draco were never friends, but by the end of the book series, they made peace and were more civil towards each other. Still, these two had a lot in common, such as their connections with Voldemort and their family background, and not just because they came from families with big reputations in the Wizarding World.

Just like Harry Potter and Voldemort are distant cousins, Harry and Draco are also related by a common ancestor – and all you have to do is take a look at the Black family tree. The connection between these two goes all the way back to Dorea Black, who married Charlus Potter, who was either the brother or cousin of Fleamont Potter, Harry’s grandfather. This means Charlus was Harry’s great-uncle, and Dorea his great-aunt, and their son (whose name hasn’t been revealed and was removed from the tree, like Sirius Black) would be Harry’s cousin.

Now, on Dorea’s side, there’s the whole Black clan. Dorea was the great-aunt of Sirius and Regulus Black, as well as of Bellatrix, Andromeda, and Narcissa Black (later Narcissa Malfoy after marrying Lucius). Dorea would then be Draco’s great-great-aunt, being the connecting link between Harry and Draco. As mentioned above, almost all families in the Wizarding World are related one way or another, and the Black family tree is a really good example. Sirius Black was not only Harry’s godfather because he was James Potter’s best friend, but there’s also a family background there. Andromeda Black, later Andromeda Tonks, is the mother of Nymphadora Tonks, and raised her grandson, Teddy Lupin, with the help of his godfather Harry Potter after the Second Wizarding War.

In addition to that, and just as an extra detail, if the Potters and Blacks didn’t have a connection with the Weasleys before, they do now following the marriage of Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley. The family trees in the Wizarding World can be tricky and confusing, as not all details have been revealed by Rowling (some still believe Charlus is Harry’s grandfather, even though she already said its Fleamont), but it’s fun to see how many of the main characters in Harry Potter are related either by blood or marriage.
