An ominous change to Destiny 2‘s social area may hint at new developments for Bungie’s long-running shared world shooter series. In 2019, erstwhile Halo developer Bungie amicably parted ways with publisher Activision, leaving the future of Destiny 2 in flux. The original Destiny was one of the biggest early hits of the current generation of consoles, but the 2017 sequel failed to reach the lofty heights of its predecessor. Nevertheless, Bungie has continued to support the online multiplayer shooter with a plethora of content updates in the intervening years.
In the wake of the Activision-Bungie separation, fans are unsure how Destiny 2 will continue moving forward. The game has shifted to a free-to-play model and the resultant title resembles an MMO more than ever before. Destiny 2 will release on next-gen consoles, a move that may bring wide alterations to the game. Regardless, Destiny 2 is currently in a state of transition, setting itself up for sweeping changes on the horizon.

Now, strange things are happening in the world (or worlds) of Destiny 2. Players on Reddit report spotting the Almighty, a giant Cabal spaceship, against the sky box sun, hinting that the large vessel may be on a crash course with Earth. Meanwhile, the music in the Tower has noticeably changed, as shared by the Say No To Rage Twitter account. Previously, the Tower’s theme was an atmospheric piece channeling the safety of home; the new piece of music is far more ominous, with these event coinciding to literally and figuratively cast an uncomfortable shadow over the typical operations that take place in the social area.
Between the Almighty and the new music for the Tower, a dark aura of foreboding lingers over Destiny 2. The current in-game season is set to end on June 9, and the stage is clearly being set for whatever comes next for the popular sci-fi shooter. Whether these changes are preparing the Destiny 2 universe for the upcoming season, or perhaps even the next-gen version of the game, remains to be seen.
The future looms large over Destiny 2. While the original game was roundly criticized for its lack of in-game storytelling, instead relegating most lore to an online companion app, the sequel has been praised for being more proactive with its story and characterization. Armed with more in-game cutscenes and environmental storytelling, as well as the recent push towards adding more story content at a regular pace, Destiny 2 has quickly become a prime destination for shooter junkies and sci-fi fans alike. Destiny 2 has seen its ups and downs over the years, but all eyes are on Bungie’s newly independent shooter to see what happens next.
