This morning, to celebrate National Streaming Day, Disney+ announced the new original series Muppets Now is set to premiere July 31. Muppets Now has been in development since 2019, even before the launch of Disney+ six months ago. The series is directed by Kirk Thatcher, who directed NBC’s It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie in 2002, has co-written numerous Muppet films, and was a supervising producer on ABC’s Muppets Tonight.

Disney+ took to Twitter today to announce the July 31 release date of Muppets Now. Not only will Kermit the Frog and the rest of the usual Muppets be present in the new series, a press release revealed “surprising special guest stars” will join them in the fun, and said the Muppets will engage in “the kind of startling silliness and heartfelt fun that first made them famous.” The six-episode, unscripted first season will be made available in the U.S., Canada, Ireland, Australia New Zealand, and India. Along with the release date, Disney+ revealed some new details they have in store for the show.

The synopsis for Muppets Now reads: In the six-episode season, Scooter rushes to make his delivery deadlines and upload the brand-new Muppet series for streaming. They are due now, and he’ll need to navigate whatever obstacles, distractions, and complications the rest of the Muppet gang throws at him. Overflowing with spontaneous lunacy, surprising guest stars and more frogs, pigs, bears (and whatevers) than legally allowed, the Muppets cut loose in Muppets Now with the kind of startling silliness and heartfelt fun that first made them famous.
