While TikTok was already a popular app, it seems to have gained even more users with so many now stuck at home, due to coronavirus. With countless trends and challenges starting on the app, it has quickly become a place for users to entertain themselves while under quarantine.

When it comes to TikTok, one of the things that makes the app so appealing is its many uses. Since its rebranding from Musical.ly, many use the app to lip sync their favorite songs or movie scenes. Some go one step further by adding an element of cosplay. Then there are the users who utilize the app as a replacement for Vine, in order to make short looping comedic videos. Of course, one of the largest groups of TikTok users is those recreating dances or challenges, such as the ‘Wash Your Hands’ dance which quickly became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the largest draws for TikTok is the collaborative nature of the app. Through the duet feature, users can not only react and respond to each other, but can also continue trends turning them into viral sensations. With popular songs often being linked to a specific dance, users can duet to either continue a trend or compare their dancing. Duets allow for reaction videos as well, where some can respond to videos making false claims or to complete on a challenge.

Duet With Sounds & Find Trends

In order to use sounds, press the plus button on the bottom of your screen to access the camera where you can begin recording. At the top of the screen you will see a button labeled “sounds.” Tap this and it will bring you to a page where you can search for a specific song, or see what’s trending across the app in different categories. If the portion of the song chosen is not where you want it to be, tap on trim and locate where you want the sound to begin. Once in place, simply hit record and you should hear the song playing in the background as the video films.

To duet others, simply find a video that you would like to duet. Click the share icon and search the bottom row of icons for the duet option. Some videos may not have this option as some users opt to not allow duets in the first place. Although, for most of the major trends on the app, this will not be the case. Tap the duet button and film the video as normal. Sound will not be an option considering duets use the sound from the original video as they are played side-by-side within the app. For examples on what you can currently duet on, some of the trends circulating right now include showcasing items in your room that no one else has, thanking front-line workers during the coronavirus outbreak, and the ongoing war in Grand Theft Auto Online - in relation to the color of alien suit worn. Classic trends from the original launch of the app, such as I’m Already Tracer, set to the song No Mercy by The Living Tombstone, still gets a duet occasionally.

Overall, there are many options to choose from, and thanks to the high number of TikTok users, a possible duet could be just a swipe away. Then again, you could also come up with something original, it could go viral, and start a new TikTok trend with others looking to add their own duets.
