No Longer on Steam, Red Candle Games’ ‘Devotion’ Preserved by Harvard University Library

Horror

Last year, as a result of what was deemed criticism of China, Red Candle Games’ Devotion was pulled from Steam, and Red Candle Games themselves were put through the wringer. The developer ultimately chose to not re-release a “sanitized” version of the game, leaving those who wanted to play it (but missed the chance to buy it on Steam) left empty-handed.

Leave it to the Harvard-Yenching Library at Harvard University to give the game (as well as it’s predecessor, Detention, which is still on Steam) a home in the university’s East Asian collections. Red Candle Games announced the news on their Facebook page. The dev also took the opportunity to state that the company is still together.

“For the past one year, we are sorry for making our community worried”, they write. “Although the current status might not be ideal, we are still here and that nothing has changed – we are and will always develop games with the same passion.” Red Candle Games was forced to assume liability for losses incurred by the game being forced off of Steam, and was effectively blackballed by the Chinese government.

Red Candle concludes the post by acknowledging the difficult year but that “will keep going, and hopefully in the future we could share more works with you all.”
