Is Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ Series Casting a Young Luke Skywalker?

Movies

We’ve got a fascinating and downright believable new rumor about the Obi-Wan Kenobi show that is currently in the works for Disney+. At this point, little has been revealed about the series, only that Ewan McGregor will be returning as the infamous Jedi and that it will take place roughly eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith. Now, thanks to this fancy new rumor, we know another famous face from a galaxy far, far away may be appearing as well in the form of Luke Skywalker.

Before digging in, we must caution that this is merely a rumor for the time being, as it hasn’t been confirmed by anyone at Disney or Lucasfilm. It should not be taken as the world of law. Merely something worth discussing. That said, according to known scooper DanielRPK, the series is currently casting for a young Luke Skywalker. There is no word on what young actors could be on the list and there is no information on how significant, or minor, the role will be.

Given the show’s timeline, Luke Skywalker would be roughly eight-years-old. When Luke first encounters Obi-Wan in Star Wars: A New Hope, it’s quite obvious the two don’t really know one another. Though, Luke is familiar with “old Ben Kenobi.” So it seems unlikely that there would be any sort of deep relationship developing between the two on the show. That said, it would make some sense to have Luke appear, since Obi-Wan’s whole reason for going to Tatooine was to watch over the boy. In that way, it might be weird if we didn’t at least see the young, future Jedi off in the distance, or for brief moments.

What we know for sure is that Deborah Chow, who directed some of The Mandalorian, is set to helm the Obi-Wan Disney+ show. Hossein Amini, meanwhile, serves as one of the writers. Originally, Disney and Lucasfilm were looking to give Ewan McGregor his own Star Wars movie, like Solo or Rogue One. There is quite a bit of credible evidence to suggest the project got pretty far down the road before it was scrapped, like thanks to the lackluster box office performance of Solo. Luckily, once Disney+ became a thing, the studio decided to repurpose the project as a series.

There is plenty of opportunity for other familiar faces to appear. Joel Edgerton has already hinted that he could be returning as Luke’s uncle Owen, after playing the part in the prequels. It’s also highly possible we’ll see Liam Neeson as a Qui-Gon Force ghost. And who knows? Maybe we’ll even see Darth Maul or Darth Vader show up? Undoubtedly, there is a lot to explore during that time frame. The Obi-Wan series does not yet have a release date set, but production is expected to take place in 2020. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as more details on the project are made available. This news was previously reported by Comicbook.com.
