New Birds of Prey Photos Go Behind-the-Scenes with Harley Quinn

Movies

Some new photos from Birds of Prey have dropped online. Margot Robbie hasn’t graced the screen as Harley Quinn since 2016’s Suicide Squad, but that’s all set to change early next year, as this is going to be the first comic book movie coming our way in 2020, and Robbie is back. This time, as we can see from these photos, Harley has changed up her look quite a bit and this isn’t going to be a rehash of what came before. This is a new Harley in a totally new setting.

The photos offer several glimpses at Margot Robbie in just one of her new outfits as Harley Quinn. She’s got a white shirt with the famed DC character’s name on it, pink suspenders hanging loosely, short shorts and pale white skin. In one photo she’s carrying a bat, in another she’s got a gun ready to go. This is, undoubtedly, a far cry from what fans saw in Suicide Squad. Robbie, who also serves as a producer on the movie, is excited to finally get it out into the world.

“I feel like I’ve spent so long thinking about it, and working on it, that it’s going to be really nice to be able to put it out in the world.”

At one point, following the financial success of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. began developing several different spin-offs centered on Harley Quinn. Gotham City Sirens seems to no longer be in the works, and the other we heard about would have paired her with Jared Leto’s Joker once again. Leto won’t be part of the equation this time around. As Margot Robbie explains, she felt there was much more to explore with the character moving forward.

“Once I started getting to know her, and prepping for [Suicide Squad], I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, there is so much more to be done with this character.’ Obviously, you can only do so much in a film like Suicide Squad where there are so many other characters, and you’ve got to be introduced to everyone, and you’ve got a huge plot thing to contend with. So I was just like, ‘There is so much more to do with her.'”

Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) is in the director’s chair, working from a script by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee). Harley Quinn will have some company in the form of Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane, Fargo) as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell (True Blood) as Black Canary, Rosie Perez (Fearless, Pitch Perfect 2) as Renee Montoya and newcomer Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain. On the villain side, we’ve got Chris Messina (Argo, Sharp Objects) as Victor Zsasz and Ewan McGregor (Doctor Sleep, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith) as Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask.

Next year, DC Films is also set to release Wonder Woman 1984, which recently debuted its first trailer. 2021 will see the release of The Batman, The Suicide Squad, which will also feature Harley Quinn, and Dwayne Johnson’s long-awaited Black Adam movie. Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is set to hit theaters on February 7, 2020. Be sure to check out the new photos for yourself below.
