IMDB has revealed its list of the top ten most-anticipated movies of 2020. The new year is just around the corner and, while there are several major releases still set to hit theaters before we leave 2019, and the decade, behind us, it’s time to start looking ahead to what’s coming our way next year. According to IMDB, Birds of Prey is the movie that people are most excited to see in 2020, which is more good news for Warner Bros. and DC Films.
Birds of Prey sees the return of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and also features Ewan McGregor as the villain Black Mask. The R-rated spin-off looks to continue DC’s recent hot streak, following Aquaman, Shazam and Joker. Coming in at number two, in something of a big surprise, is Sonic the Hedgehog. Initially, this video game adaptation was met with a wave of backlash over the main character’s design. After the recently released trailer revealed the redesign, which was well-received, this movie’s stock went up in a big way. IMDB said the following in explaining how they came up with the top ten this year.
“Rather than base its annual rankings on small statistical samplings or reviews from professional critics, IMDb determines its list of most popular movies by the actual page views of the more than 200 million monthly visitors to IMDb. This exclusive and definitive data is derived from the IMDbPro movie and TV rankings, which are updated weekly throughout the year.”
The number three spot goes to Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited sequel to the 80s classic that sees Tom Cruise returning to the role all these years later. The nostalgia angle, coupled with Cruise’s status as a major global movie star, seems to be working with this one. Number four goes to No Time to Die, the 25th James Bond movie, and the finale for Daniel Craig’s versions of 007. This one has been a long time coming and the recent trailer did a lot to get fans excited. Craig will be facing off against a new villain played by Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek.
Perhaps most interestingly, Disney doesn’t see an entry on the list until number five with Marvel’s Black Widow. The Mouse House also owns the number six spot with the upcoming Mulan live-action remake. Disney recently set a new record with $10 billion in global box office in 2019, and the studio’s dominance has been the stuff of legend. So it’s perhaps surprising that there are so many non-Disney movies on the list. In more good news for DC, Wonder Woman 1984, which also debuted its first trailer recently at CCXP, has landed in the number seven spot. The 80s-set sequel sees Gal Gadot returning as the famed hero.
Another relative surprise is the number eight spot, which goes to Dune. The big-budget adaptation of Frank Herbert’s beloved sci-fi novel boasts a stacked cast, which includes Timothee Chalamet, Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac and Zendaya, just to new a few. Hopefully, this won’t turn into another Blade Runner 2049 situation for Warner Bros. Rounding out the top ten is The King’s Man at number nine. The prequel to The Kingsman movies centers on an entirely different cast and, thanks to the Disney/Fox merger, is technically a Disney release. Last, but certainly not least, is Fast & Furious 9, which will bring Vin Diesel’s Dom and the rest of the Fast Family back to the big screen for more high-octane madness.
