The Black Widow trailer is still making quite a bit of noise after being released earlier in the week. Marvel Studios is keeping up their streak of showing off Phase 4 goods following the release of Avengers: Endgame earlier this year, as they brought a brand new Black Widow poster, as well as some new footage, to Comic Con Experience Brazile. The poster has made its way online for all to see but, unfortunately, the footage was exclusive for those in attendance. Though, it did reveal an important connection.
Starting with the new CCXP poster, it focuses on Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff entirely. This isn’t some sort of floating head photoshop job. It’s much more stylized. The artistic style looks more anime-esque and sees Nat with her red hair, looking rather serious. This is very much the version of the character we were familiar with before she adopted her golden blonde locks in Infinity War. It’s a stylish poster. One that was given to those who were lucky enough to be in the crowd at CCXP.
As far as the footage goes, it wasn’t the same Black Widow trailer that debuted online earlier this week. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige was on hand to show off the extended footage, which showcased more of David Harbour’s Red Guardian. Specifically, he asked Natasha if Captain America had asked about him, since he’s essentially the Russian answer to Steve Rogers. It was also revealed in the footage that Red Guardian, aka Alexei Shostakov, used to be married to Rachel Weisz’s character Melina. A sequence also reportedly showed Florence Pugh’s Yelena taking a shot of vodka. She then ran toward a motorcycle and said, “My sister, an Avenger.”
In addition to Black Widow, Marvel also showcased the very first footage from Eternals, which was reportedly met with a very warm response from the crowd. Some stills from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, one of the live-action shows being produced for Disney+, were also showcased. Speaking about Scarlett Johansson’s first MCU solo movie on stage, Kevin Feige teased that it will explore elements of the character’s past, while also planting seeds for the future of the MCU. Feige also had very kind things to say about Black Widow in general, saying she is one of the most important members of The Avengers.
“Black Widow is one of the best, most important Avengers. She saved the world in Endgame.”
Given Natasha’s fate in Avengers: Endgame, this movie will be a prequel taking place after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Cate Shortland (Lore, Berlin Syndrome) is in the director’s chair and will be the first female director to helm an MCU movie on her own. Anna Boden previously co-directed Captain Marvel with Ryan Fleck. Black Widow is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2020, and will be the first movie in Phase 4 of the MCU.
