James Wan Shares Malignant Sneak Peek Photo as Shooting Nears an End

Movies

James Wan has shared a new set image from Malignant. The director is currently taking a break from the Aquaman franchise to focus on his return to the horror genre. Wan is keeping things under wraps in terms of the story, but he did share that they are almost finished with principal photography, which should be exciting news for horror fans. As for the image itself, there’s not a whole lot going on except for the slate that shows off what appears to be the upcoming movie’s logo.

Malignant begin shooting in September. The thriller stars Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle), Jake Abel (Supernatural), George Young (Containment), Maddie Hasson (Mr. Mercedes), Michole Briana White (Encino Man) and Jacqueline McKenzie (Pine Gap). The plot is unknown at this time, but it is based on a story that James Wan wrote with his fianc&é Ingrid Bisu (The Nun). It is believed that the story will be based on Wan’s 2011 graphic novel Malignant Man, but that has yet to be officially confirmed at this time.

If the plot of Malignant is based on the graphic novel, the story will revolve around a character with a terminal cancer diagnosis. Things seem normal until the character finds out that the tumor is actually a parasite, which grants the character mysterious powers. The main character then goes on to fight an evil army buried underneath society’s skin while also unlocking the secrets of a forgotten past. In the graphic novel, the main character’s name is Alan Gates. However, it looks like Annabelle Wallis is leading the cast, so we could see a gender swap, along with other major changes when the movie hits theaters.

It’s important to note that it has not been confirmed what Malignant will be about. James Wan could have just decided to have the only similarity be in the title from the graphic novel. The director is keeping as much as he can under wraps to deliver a surprise to horror fans who are anxiously waiting to see what this mysterious project is all about. Hopefully Wan will break his silence in regard to the movie in the coming months. Perhaps after the new year we’ll be treated to the first footage from the movie, along with some more concrete information.

Malignant is all set to hit theaters on August 14th, 2020. We still have a pretty long wait, but principal photography is nearly done, which means the post-production process is next. From there, we should have a trailer by at least spring, along with some more teases from James Wan on social media, if he decides to be generous. After that, it might be time to start getting into Aquaman 2 mode, which DC fans are deeply excited for. Jason Momoa helped out with the story thig time around and he’s very happy with the results. It will be interesting to see how the sequel holds up to the original. You can check out the latest set photo from Malignant below, thanks to James Wan’s Instagram account.
