Chris Hemsworth Shot Fat Thor Scenes Before Ragnarok & Infinity War

Avengers: Endgame Fat Thor scenes were shot before Ragnarok and Infinity War. Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely can’t believe they were able to keep that secret for so long. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has said in the past that the planning for Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame took place years in advance. Now, we’re finding out that some of the scenes shown in the last Avengers movie were shot well before anyone, even the cast and crew, knew it was happening.

In 2017, the Russo Brothers posted a picture of themselves on the Thor: Ragnarok set. Marvel Cinematic Universe fans found it to be odd for a few reasons. The first was that Anthony Russo was seen holding Mjolnir, which was destroyed by Hella in the trailer. Second of all, what were they doing there? As it turns out, the since deleted photo, was more than likely when they were on set to shoot the Fat Thor scenes. Stephen McFeely explains.

“So it basically went movie one and then movie 2, with the pretty big exception of all the Asgard stuff. So that (scene) during Cathedral was early in the schedule and that was movie two. So that was shot two years ago. And it’s always blown my mind that, you know, we were using heavy Thor well before the first movie ever came out.”

Stephen McFeely also noted that the cast was pretty thrown off by Chris Hemsworth’s new Fat Thor look, mainly because they hadn’t seen the scripts for Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame at that point. Joe Russo chimed in by stating, “Ragnarok had not even been shot.” Marvel Studios is known for their secrecy, but even for them, it’s pretty amazing that nothing leaked from the set, spoiling Fat Thor two years before he was introduced.

Now that we have seen The God of Thunder’s transformation, a lot of fans want to know if he will stay on the larger side for Thor: Love and Thunder. Director Taika Waititi was recently asked about the situation and claimed they had not gotten that far in the planning process yet. However, that seems pretty weird since the weight gain was written so early. Waititi could just be playing coy, or he really doesn’t know if they’re going to keep the extra pounds on.

MCU fans were shocked to see what happened to Thor in the years after Thanos completed his goal. He gained a bunch of weight, became a functional alcoholic, and fell down a deep hole of depression. While it was a funny gag, the Russo Brothers wanted it to feel real, which is why they never went back to the buff God of Thunder at the end of the movie. Thor was depressed and coped with it the way a lot of people in the real-world do. The interview with the Avengers: Endgame creative team was originally conducted by Hollywood Unscripted.
