The name of the Stranger Things season 4 premiere has been revealed, which has a shout out to the X-Men. Stranger Things has been one of Netflix’s most popular shows since it debuted back in 2016. The show has been on Netflix for three seasons now, and with the immense popularity of the series, the Duffer Brothers are currently working on the fourth.
Stranger Things takes place in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s. With the kids in the show being geeks, there are several shoutouts to popular movies, TV shows, and games from the 1980s. The first season mirrors scenes from popular ’80s movies like The Shining, Alien, and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, and the characters flat out dressed up as the Ghostbusters in season 2. Season 3 continued the fun with the kids sneaking into a movie theater to see Day of the Dead and by also featuring a character that feels eerily similar to the T-800 from The Terminator. Not much is known about season 4 just yet, but the season premiere references the X-Men.
The Stranger Things writers’ room Twitter account, Stranger Writers, recently shared an image of the script for the season 4 premiere, which is titled “Chapter One: The Hellfire Club.” In the X-Men comic books, the Hellfire Club was a group of villains that often fought against the X-Men. Some of the Hellfire Club’s most notable members have appeared in X-Men: First Class and The Gifted.
Despite Stranger Things season 3 being the most-watched season to date, season 4 wasn’t confirmed until September, when Netflix released a Stranger Things season 4 announcement trailer. Since then, fans have heard very little about the show, except that it will be eight episodes and finish filming in August 2020. It’s also believed that the cast of season 4 will introduce four new characters, one of which might pertain to the Russian prison storyline.
Given how much the writers of Stranger Things have infused pop culture references into the show, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that the title is referencing X-Men, whose comic books were still going strong in the ’80s. Many people have also drawn parallels between Eleven and Jean Grey since their powers are so similar. It’s impossible to know whether the episode will have more X-Men easter eggs or if the references stop with the title of the episode, but superhero fans will no doubt appreciate the nod to the comic book team.
