Popeyes announces permanent return of fried chicken sandwich while taking shot at Chick-fil-A

Popeyes has announced the return of its much-loved chicken sandwich, while also throwing serious shade at anti-gay Chick-fil-A.

The sandwich was originally released by Popeyes during the summer, but was in such high demand that the chain ran out of stock by August.

The chicken chain released a video to announce the sandwich’s return and permanent place on the menu this Sunday (November 3), while making a dig at its religious and anti-LGBT+ rival.

Chick-fil-A is notorious for its funding of anti-LGBT+ organisations. The chain – which is the third largest fast food chain in the US, behind McDonalds and Subway – is owned by Baptists who have donated millions of dollars to anti-LGBT+ causes.

In 2012, Chick-fil-A boss Dan Cathy officially confirmed that the chain is against same-sex marriage.

The video shows a man approaching a road sign displaying the fast food restaurants available at the next exit.

Under the logo for Chick-fil-A, the sign reads “closed Sunday”. The man puts a sticker under the Popeyes logo reading “open Sunday”, a dig at the Chick-fil-A’s religious stance.

Twitter users were enjoying the shade, with one writing: “Popeye’s bringing back their chicken sandwich on a Sunday is the fast-food battle I’m here for.”

Others were certain that the video meant Popeyes was saying “gay rights”, and another said: “You know what, in my headcanon Popeyes is doing this for the gays and I for one welcome our new chicken overlords.”

The most important consideration for many Twitter users was what they would wear to the relaunch of the long-awaited Popeyes chicken sandwich.

When one person asked the restaurant chain what they should wear, Popeye’s replied on Twitter: “Come through in your Sunday best.”

Others realised that it probably wouldn’t matter, as Popeye’s would be free from judgement. One person reminded everyone: “This ain’t Chick-fil-A just come as you are.”
