Witnessing a breakup is never pleasant, especially when it seems it was a match made in heaven – but that’s all part of the deal with The Bachelorette and The Bachelor. Fans have always expressed their heavy emotions when their favorite contestant doesn’t quite make it through the rose ceremony.
Sometimes, it shakes us up a little more than usual, though. On The Bachelorette, there are those couples who are just too perfect not to make it, yet someone else ends up stealing the rose – or, worse yet, everyone goes home empty-handed. Let’s take a look at some of The Bachelorette’s most disappointing breakups.
5. Andi Dorfman and Nick Viall
Before Nick Viall had his own season on The Bachelor, he was pretty famously dumped on Andi Dorfman’s season of The Bachelorette. It was down to him and one other man, Josh Murray, who was Andi’s final choice. The choice devastated fans, as we all saw how Nick was absolutely in love and ready to propose the moment she accepted him.
Nick Viall was also the first Bachelor in history to really dish out the dirty details on his ex, making everyone fully aware of what goes on inside the Fantasy Suite. The drama placed Nick Viall as a front runner for the next Bachelor.
4. Ali Fedotowsky and Frank Neuschaefer
While most Bachelorette breakups end when the Bachelorette herself decides to end things and move on with someone else, there are several cases of self-eliminations. There is one in particular that stands out above the rest. Frank Neuschaefer was a shoo-in for the final rose, but things didn’t quite pan out that way when he told Ali Fedotowsky he still had feelings for his ex-girlfriend, sending himself home.
The event was shocking and nothing like that has ever happened before or since. One thing is for sure: it was a disappointing moment in Bachelorette history. To make matters worse, Frank confessed that he had recently broken the rules and visited his ex during the filming of that season to get closure, but instead got a fluttering heart.
3. Rachel Lindsay and Peter Kraus
Everyone fell in love with Peter Kraus during the Rachel Lindsay season, but she apparently didn’t feel as strongly. While he made it far in that season, his time on the show was cut relatively short as the couple didn’t see eye-to-eye on one very important subject. Rachel wanted an engagement, but Peter wanted to continue dating to see where things went.
Fans felt cheated and disappointed, always imagining that these two were absolutely meant for each other. Peter tried to hold on, telling Rachel he’d propose to her just so he could be with her, but Rachel felt as though he’d “resent” her and their marriage. One thing is for sure, though, this is one of the most talked-about couples in Bachelorette history.
2. Becca Kufrin and Blake Horstmann
By the time Becca Kufrin’s season was coming to an end, fans nearly unanimously saw Blake Horstmann as the recipient of the final rose. In fact, “I am in love with Blake and I can’t imagine not having Blake in my life” were words spoken by Becca just shortly before the season ended. As Blake was about to propose during that climactic ending, Becca shocked both Blake and the world with the news she chose Garrett Yrigoyen.
Fans can only wonder if this dramatic turn of events caused nice guy Blake to spiral into the Bachelor in Paradise villain he was later seen as. Apparently, the news was so traumatizing to Blake, producers thought he was going to pass out.
1. Desiree Hartsock and Brooks Forester
When Brooks Forester, one of the final three contestants of season 9, broke it off with Desiree Hartsock, fans across the world felt it. At the time, nothing like that had ever happened on The Bachelorette. What ended as potentially the biggest disappointment in Bachelorette history was a promising relationship between two fan favorites. It was absolutely heartbreaking seeing the two of them lose it on TV, and genuine heartbreak isn’t easy to witness.
This was made all the more difficult by their honest and emotional exchange. After Brooks explained he couldn’t see things progressing, she told him through tears that she loved him. Brooks asked why she didn’t tell him sooner, to which she replied: “I was going to tell you today.” That’s undeniably rough, and viewers might all agree that this was the most disappointing, hard-to-watch moments in The Bachelorette history.
