Everything old is new again, and that includes Star Wars, with The Rise of Skywalker on the way in just a few months, but also some of the items within that movie. At the end of the Star Wars The Last Jedi we saw the Skywalker lightsaber broken in two as Rey and Kylo Ren fought over it. However, in the trailers for Rise of Skywalker we’ve seen what certainly appears to be that same lightsaber back in one piece.
As part of yeaterday’s preview of the products that will be available next week on Triple Force Friday, Lucasfilm held a livestream that emanated from Pinewood Studios in London, and on display there were a number of props that were used in Rise of Skywalker, including the Skywalker lightsaber which Rey has successfully rebuilt. Check it out.
As can be seen, the lightsaber has a new band in the middle, which is meant to be the piece that Rey has used to hold the two segments together. It’s a nice look and overall doesn’t make it obvious that the thing was ever broken. I’m sure there was a bit more to rebuilding Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber than simply strapping the two halves back together, but that’s all you can notice by looking at it.
Of course, one big question about the rebuilt lightsaber is whether or not we’ll actually see how Rey repairs it in the film itself. We know that, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will not be picking up immediately after The Last Jedi, so it’s possible that Rey has already done the work by the time the movie has started, and we’ll only see the finished product.
She’s had the Jedi texts in her possession the entire time, and one assumes there’s a chapter in one of them on how to build and repair lightsabers, right? Of course, she might need some pretty specialized parts, so maybe it has taken her time to fix the lightsaber and it won’t be done until after the movie starts, or we’ll get to see it happen in a flashback.
The images from Pinewood Studio’s from StarWars.com‘s social media co-ordinator also include a look at another reforged item, Kylo Ren’s mask. He smashed it to bits in anger back in The Last Jedi, but as the new Supreme Leader, he has decided to weld it back together. And the mask looks that much more terrifying with all the welds.
Of course, the Skywalker lightsaber isn’t the only weapon wielded by Rey that fans are curious about. We’ve seen the character (or possibly a clone or twin?) with a Darth Maul style dual bladed lightsaber, though one that adds a hinge in the middle. What that saber, and that entire image, mean is not part of any of the toys that were part of the Triple Force Friday preview, so nothing new has been revealed in that area.
All answers will bev revealed when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters December 20.
