Just in time for Halloween, Annabelle Comes Home is scheduled for release on Blu-ray and DVD on October 8, 2019. This film marks the third installment in the Annabelle series. The Annabelle movies are based on a real-life haunted doll that resides in Ed and Lorraine Warren’s Occult Museum.
Moviegoers got their first glimpse of Annabelle in the first The Conjuring movie which was released in 2013. In 2014, Annabelle was the subject of her own film. The second Annabelle movie was released in 2017. While I was a fan of the first film in the Annabelle series, I was not a massive fan of the second film, Annabelle creation. Going in to view the third film, Annabelle Comes Home; I was unsure of what to expect.
Gary Dauberman directed the film. Annabelle comes home marks Gary’s directorial debut. However, Gary is no stranger to the Annabelle franchise. He is the writer behind Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, It, It Chapter Two, and now Annabelle Comes Home. The film stars Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, and Mckenna Grace.
The movie opens up with Ed and Lorraine Warren receiving the Annabelle Doll from two nurses. The nurses had complained that the doll was responsible for evil and violent acts. The Warrens take Annabelle to their home. They secure her in a glass case in the Warrens’ Occult Museum. The glass is from a chapel and is supposed to help keep the haunted doll caged. Annabelle is now home.
The Warrens have to go out of town. They leave their daughter Judy at home with her babysitter, Mary Ellen. During the course of this night, Annabelle is let out of the case. The mischief that the haunted doll causes is not only frightening but potentially deadly.
There are two things to keep in mind when watching Annabelle Comes Home. The first is that Judy, Ed and Lorraine’s daughter, is also a sensitive. She has similar if not the same ability as her mother, Lorraine. She can see and detect paranormal things that other people cannot see or understand.
The second is that the Annabelle doll serves as a beacon for paranormal activity. When Annabelle gets out, she can really cause mischief because she is housed in an occult museum full of other haunted items. This makes for a highly entertaining and creepy story.
Many of the movies in The Conjuring Universe rely too much on simple jump scares. Annabelle Comes Home does not make this mistake. Gary Dauberman does an excellent job creating a sense of intense anxiety and dread in this picture. The threats can come from anywhere. This creates an atmosphere where the viewer can’t predict where the evil is coming from next.
Annabelle Comes Home is the best film in the Annabelle franchise. I hope that Gary Dauberman will continue to direct horror films. I believe he could have a great career as a hard director especially if he continues writing and directing on this level.
