Jai Courtney Teases Captain Boomerang’s Return In The Suicide Squad

Movies

Although he debuted in the comics as a Flash villain and continues to antagonize the Scarlet Speedster periodically, Digger Harkness, a.k.a. Captain Boomerang, is arguably just as well known for being a member of the Suicide Squad, having been affiliated with the group since it was re-imagined in the 1980s. So naturally he was included in 2016’s Suicide Squad, played by Jai Courtney, and he’ll also be one of the few returning characters in the next cinematic appearance of the officially-designated Task Force X, The Suicide Squad.

Sure, throwing weapons from Australia are key to depicting Captain Boomerang, but when it comes to Jai Courtney’s version of the character, that gold tooth is almost as important… somewhat important? Okay, maybe it’s not that big a deal, but the actor wears it finely, and this Instagram post makes it clear that Jai Courtney is ready to step back into

Even by the Suicide Squad’s standards, Captain Boomerang is particularly abhorrent due to his cowardice and obnoxious behavior. And yet, he’s been a mainstay in the Squad for decades on the printed page, and Jai Courntey’s Boomerang was one of the main sources of comedic relief in the last movie, making it logical why he’d be back for The Suicide Squad.

When we last saw Captain Boomerang in the DC Extended Universe, he was the only surviving member of the team who didn’t get any perks following the mission to defeat Enchantress and Incubus in Midway City. Clearly his luck hasn’t changed if he’s still having to serve on the team, although it’s unclear if Boomerang has been stuck in prison this whole time or if he returned to the outside world, and then was tossed back into Belle Reve.

Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang is one of only four characters who will be back for The Suicide Squad, the other three being Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller and Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag. The rest of the cast is comprised of brand-new faces, from John Cena and Michael Rooker to David Dastmalchian and Daniela Melchior, though it’ll be a while until we officially learn who their characters are.

This time around, Jai Courtney and his fellow performers are being directed by James Gunn, who also wrote the script. Gunn boarded The Suicide Squad during that period when he’d been fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and once he’s done with this DC project, he’ll return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to reunite with Star-Lord and the gang. Principal photography on The Suicide Squad is set to begin soon in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Suicide Squad charges into theaters on August 21, 2021, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on its development. You can also learn what other DC movies are on the way with our comprehensive guide.
